What are storage devices?

A storage device is an internal

part of the computer hardware
which stores information/data to
process the result of any
computational work.
The two types of
storage devices are:
● Primary storage devices

● Secondary storage devices

What are primary
storage devices?

Primary storage devices are the media that

hold memory for a shorter time of period

when the computer is running.

Examples
:
● RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY (R.A.M) -Contents of RAM are lost when

the computer is turned off therefore ram is volatile.

RAM stores data and programs currently in use when the computer is

running.

The computer will perform faster with more RAM.

● Read only memory (ROM) – ROM stores instructions that tell

the computer how to start up.

Contents of ROM are not lost when the computer is turned off

therefore ROM is Non-Volatile memory.

ROM cannot be written to (altered) but only read.

What are secondary
storage devices?
A secondary storage device is a
non-volatile data storage device
that retains information even
when the power is turned off.
Examples:

● Optical storage- It is a removable storage device.eg,

compact disc

● Cloud and virtual storage- Data is stored virtually

instead of being on a physical hard drive or disc.

● Magnetic storage devices-e.g., Floppy disc, Super disc

● Flash memory devices- used to store data e.g., Memory

cards

secondary devices
Uses of storage
devices
● It helps the computer to run or
boot up.
● It’s a hardware that is used for
storing, porting or extracting
data files.
● It can also store more
information/ data temporarily
and permanently
The importance of
storage devices

Storage devices are important

because the expand your storage

options, allowing you to store

larger amounts of data, backup

important files, and transfer data

between devices.
Advantages of storage device

● Increased storage capacity

● Allows data backup and

security

● Improves performance

● Portability and sharing

● Archiving and long- term

storage
Disadvantages of
storage devices

● Prone to scratching and

damage

● Slower data access

● Limited storage access

● Delicate especially to electronic

fields.
Conclusion
It can be concluded that storage

devices are a piece of hardware

that is primarily used for storing

data/information. Storage devices

are getting smaller as technology

advances. There is one or different

sizes to satisfy the need of
