PERFORM
HAIRSTRAIGHTENING TO
CLIENTS
Hair rebonding/straightening
is a hair-styling technique that
involves flattening and straightening
of hair in order to give smooth, steam-
lined, and ‘sleek’ appearance.
BENEFITS OF CHEMICAL
HAIR STRAIGHTENING
WHAT IS CHEMICAL HAIR
STRAIGHTENING?
CHEMICAL HAIR STRAIGHTENING IS THE MOST
PERMANENT OF ALL OF THE SMOOTHING
METHODS, IT CAN INFLICT THE MOST DAMAGE ON
YOUR HAIR. IN THIS PROCESS, A CHEMICAL CREAM-
OFTEN AN ALKALINE- IS APPLIED TO “RELAX” THE
CURLS, BREAKING HAIR’S PROTEIN BOND. IT CAN
OFFER SEVERAL BENEFITS FOR INDIVIDUALS WHO
DESIRE LONG LASTING STRAIGHT HAIR.
BENEFITS OF CHEMICAL HAIR
STRAIGHTENING

1. Long-lasting results: Chemical hair

straightening treatments can provide straight
hair that lasts for several months, and in some
cases, even up to a year. This eliminates the
need for daily styling and reduces the time
spent on hair care routines.
2. Reduced styling time: With chemically
straightened hair, the styling time is significantly
reduced. Hair becomes more manageable and
easier to style, requiring minimal effort for a sleek
and smooth look.

3. Frizz control: Chemically straightened hair tends

to have reduced frizz, making it easier to maintain
a polished appearance, particularly in humidity or
damp conditions.
4. Versatility: Straightened hair offers
versatility in styling options. It can be worn
sleek and smooth, curled, or styled in various
ways depending on individual preferences.

5. Enhanced manageability: Straightened hair

is typically easier to comb, brush, and
detangle. It can also be more responsive to
styling products, allowing for better hold and
control.
6. Improved overall appearance: For
individuals with naturally curly or wavy
hair who prefer a straight hairstyle,
chemical straightening can help achieve
the desired look, improving self-
confidence and satisfaction with their
appearance.
*It's important to note that chemical hair
straightening treatments should be performed by a
professional hairstylist, as the chemicals used can
be potent and require precise application
techniques. Additionally, proper aftercare and
maintenance, including using recommended hair
care products and scheduling regular touch-up
appointments, are essential to keep the hair healthy
and minimize potential damage.
WHAT IS HAIR CHEMISTRY
AND RESTRUCTURING?
HAIR CHEMISTRY - Refers to the scientific
study of the structure, composition, and
behavior of hair. Understanding hair chemistry
is crucial for hair care professionals, such as
hairdressers and stylists, as it helps them make
informed decisions about hair treatments,
products, and styling techniques.
HAIR STRUCTURING - also known as hair
restructuring or hair treatment, refers to the process
of altering the structure and condition of hair through
chemical or physical means. There are various types
of hair REstructuring treatments available, including
perming, relaxing, straightening, and conditioning.
• PERMING - involves the use of chemicals to
break and re-form the disulfide bonds in the hair's
cortex, which allows the hair to take on a new
shape. This process can create curls, waves, or
volume depending on the desired outcome.
• RELAXING - also known as chemical
straightening, is a process that chemically
breaks down the natural curl pattern of the hair.
It involves the use of relaxing creams or lotions,
which reduce the curliness and loosen the hair's
texture.
• STRAIGHTENING TREATMENTS - such as
keratin treatments or Japanese straightening,
use chemicals and heat to permanently alter the
structure of the hair, making it straighter and
smoother.
• CONDITIONING TRATMENTS - aim to
improve the overall health and
appearance of the hair. These
treatments often involve the use of
deep-conditioning masks, hot oil
treatments, or protein treatments that
help restore moisture, repair damage,
and strengthen the hair strands.
– *It is important to note that hair instructuring
treatments can have both positive and negative
effects on the hair. Therefore, it is essential to
consult with a professional stylist who has
expertise in hair chemistry and instructuring, as
they can assess your hair type, condition, and
desired outcome to determine the best
approach for your hair. Additionally, proper
aftercare and maintenance are crucial to keep
the hair healthy and minimize potential
damage from these treatments.
It is useful to know how the process
affects the structure of the hair. The
hair strands are composed of cuticle
(the translucent and has a protective
function), the cortex (forms the bulk of
the hair, this is where chemical
changes occur), and the medulla (it is
the center of the hair shaft).
In order for the hair to form new,
its protein structure must be
softened so that the hair can
assume the straight shape. The
hair is softened by a chemical
reaction that breaks the disulfide
bonds. This is called reforming
step.
The protein chains, which were
previously connected to each
other, are now released from each
other and move to take on the
straight shape. Once the
straightening solution is rinsed
from the hair, a second chemical
solution is applied. This is called
neutralizing or oxidizing agent.
CHEMICALS AND TOOLS USED IN
HAIR REBONDING/STRAIGHTENING
1. Straightening Cream
 Sodium hydroxide cream
softener/relaxants (Lye) are the
strongest and fastest acting
chemicals
 Guanidine calcium hydroxide
cream softeners/relaxants (no-lye)
is normally used for clients with
sensitive scalp.
CHEMICALS AND TOOLS USED IN
HAIR REBONDING/STRAIGHTENING
 Ammonium thioglycolate is
used basically on hair that has very
soft curl and soft wave pattern,
 Cysteamine hydrochloride
straightens the hair at a lower pH
than the thioglycolate

2. Hydroxide neutralization
The neutralization of
hydroxide relaxers
deactivates the alkaline
residues left in the hair by the
relaxer.

3. Hydroxide cream
softener/relaxant
Virgin cream
softener/relaxant application
should be used for virgin hair
that has been chemically
treated.

Retouch Cream
softener/relaxant application
should be used for hair that
had previous chemical
texture services

4. Keratin Hair Straightening
Treatment
Keratin is a protein found
naturally in our hair. This
treatment infuses the vitall
element keratin back in to
each strand hair.

5. Hair Straightening Iron
Check the following when purchasing a
flat iron:
Plates. High quality flat irons use
ceramic/tourmaline plates
Tourmaline. It is a semi-precious
stone that has the ability to aid in the
detoxification of the human body

Handles. Marcel handles are what
professionals use. The other type of
handle is is a spring type.
Heating. The best results when using
flat iron that has a heat setting of
400°F. for those with fine hair, a lower
setting should be used.

Preparation for Hair
Straightening

1. Consultation. The hairdresser must
find out what the client wants or needs.
Obtain the information from the client
such as details of prevoius treatments
or products used. All diagnosis and
consultation must be recorded on a
client record card.

suitable sized gown to ensure that all
the client’s clothes are covered.
3. Protective Barrier. A protective
barrier must be applied around the
hairline to prevent damage to the skin
from hazardous chemicals.
