Quarter 2
Week 4 - Day 1
Objective:
The learner should be able to 1.
Make an inventory of vertebrates
and invertebrates that are commonly
seen in the community.
2. Practice ways of caring and
protecting animals
Distinguishing
Characteristics
of Vertebrates
Identifying and describing different
organ of the body system. Read the
description and function in the
following and complete the blanks
with the specific organ being
described.
_________1. The pumping organ of
the body that made up of cardiac
muscle.
_________2. The largest organ that
covers and protect the whole
body.
_________3. It serves as framework
of the body.
_________4. Main organ of the
nervous system that interpret and
process messages from sensory
organ.
_________5. The chief organ of the
respiratory system where the
exchange of gases occurs.
Let’s compare the animals in the
picture. What are their differences?
Different animals share our planet
with us. Many are alike and many
are different. Scientist classify
based on characteristics, their
similarities and dissimilarities.
As you go through this lesson, you
should be able to describe the
characteristics of vertebrates and
invertebrates and practice ways of
caring and protecting animals.
The class will be divided into five
groups. They will be given with one
classification of vertebrate and
they need to give 3 characteristics
they observed about the animals
assigned to their group.
Group 1 – Fish
Group 2 – Amphibians
Group 3 – Reptiles
Group 4 – Bird
Group 5 – Mammal

Characteristics of
Vertebrates
What is a
vertebrate?
Let’s further discuss today
the different characteristics
and classification of
vertebrates
Vertebrates have the following
characteristics:

1. All vertebrates have muscles

and skeletons that help them to
move around easily and perform
complex moves.
2. All vertebrates also have an
endoskeleton, which consists of the bones
that are inside a body which gives them
their shape and allows them to stand
erect.
3. All vertebrates have some or all of
these systems: muscular system, skeletal
system, excretory system, immune
system and nervous system, and skin
covered with scales, fur, hair, or feathers.
Classification of vertebrates
1. Fishes
> are cold-blooded animals and have
streamlined body. Fishes have gills to
breathe and fins for movement. In most of
the cases, the body is covered with scales
which provide protection to the body. Some
examples are goldfish, milkfish and sharks.
2. Amphibians
> are cold-blooded animals and can
live both on land and in water.
Amphibians breathe through both
lungs and moist skin and reproduce
only in water. Some examples are
toad, frog, and salamander.
3. Reptiles
> are cold -blooded animals. Reptiles
live on land and breathe with the help of
lungs. They have dry and scaly skin.
Reptiles lay eggs. Some examples are
snake, turtle and crocodile.
4. Birds
> are warm blooded animals. Their
body is covered with feathers. Birds
breathe through lung. Their bones
are hollow and lay eggs Examples
are pigeons, parrot, peacock.
5. Mammals
> animals with mammary glands.
They are warm blooded animals and
breathe through lungs. Mammals
give birth to babies. They have
mammary glands to produce milk.
Some examples are human, dog,
cat.
1. What animals live in water with
gills, fins and scales?
F_ _ h
2. What animals with backbones
called?
_er__b__t_s
3. What animals with wings,
feathers that love to fly?
B_ _s
4. What group of vertebrates is a
dog?
M_ _ _ a _ s
5. What group of vertebrates is a frog?
A___ib__ns
6. What group of vertebrates is snake?
R__ti__s
Frogs are useful animals that eat
insects that are harmful to human and
other animals. People living in a rural
area exploit it by consuming them as
food. Since frog population is already
diminishing in number, in what way
you can be of help to remind the
people the importance of frogs?
➢ A vertebrate is an animal
with a backbone.
➢ Fishes, amphibians, reptiles,
birds, and mammals, including
humans, are all
vertebrates.
Write the correct classification
of vertebrates as illustrated.
Write the answers in your
science notebook.
Make a collage of
vertebrates from different
magazines or any printed
material.

What are the different
classification of
vertebrates?
Let’s have an enrichment
activity about the different
classification of
vertebrates
Let’s compare the animals in the
picture. What are their differences?
Give 2 examples of
animals for each type
of vertebrate.
Mammals such as dogs and cats
were cared as pet. They were furry
animals that usually have ticks and
fleas in their bodies that were
parasitic. These parasites harmed
their host and often cause health
problems to animals. How 'Will you
get rid of these pests that
threatened your pet?
➢ A vertebrate is an animal
with a backbone.
➢ Fishes, amphibians, reptiles,
birds, and mammals, including
humans, are all vertebrates.
Directions: Classify the
following vertebrates in their
proper column. Write your
answer in your science
notebook.
bangus lizard snake
bat tilapia maya
cat swamp frog
stingray toad frog
galonggong gecko "tuko"
crocodile carabao
Create a poster how to take
care of vertebrate animals.

1. What characteristics are similar to
all vertebrates?
2. In what way is a mammal different
from reptiles, amphibians, birds, and
fish?
3. How do reptiles and amphibians
differ?
What can you see in the
picture?

People in the picture collect

animal tusk, and some animals
dies because of this.
_________4. Main organ of the
nervous system that interpret and
process messages from sensory
organ.
_________5. The chief organ of the
respiratory system where the
exchange of gases occurs.
For today’s lesson, you will
create an inventory of how
to protect vertebrate
animals.
The class will be divided into five
groups. Each group needs to make
an inventory of 5 vertebrates
found in their community and
suggest ways of protecting these
animals.
