Understanding

Projectile Motion
Objectives
• Define projectile motion.
• Understand the components of projectile motion.
• Apply kinematics equations to calculate range, time of
flight, and maximum height
Introduction to Projectile
Motion
• Projectile motion: is the motion of an object thrown or
projected into the air, subject to only the acceleration of
gravity. The object is on its own once it's in the air, and
gravity affects its vertical motion without affecting its
horizontal motion

Components of Projectile
Motion
• Horizontal motion (x-axis): ux,constant velocity
Ux = U Cosϴ
• Vertical motion (y-axis): uyacceleration due to gravity
(Uniform acceleration)
Uy = U Sinϴ
U2= Ux2 +Uy2 Pythagorean Theory

Equations of Motion
• Horizontal Motion:
In the absence of air resistance,
the horizontal component of
velocity (u0x) remains constant.
x=ux⋅t ;

Where :
X: is the horizontal distance traveled,
ux: is the horizontal velocity
component,
t : is the time of flight.
 Equations of Motion
• Vertical motion:
• Accelerated Motion: The vertical
motion is influenced by gravity,
which acts downwards, causing the
object to accelerate at a rate of g
(9.81 m/s² on Earth).
• Initial Velocity: uy =u sin(θ) where
u is the initial velocity and θ the
launch angle.
• Velocity at time t : V =uy−g⋅t
• Position at time t : Y =uy⋅t− g⋅t2
• Velocity squared: v2=uy2−2g⋅y

to roller coasters.
Review of Key Concepts
• Two components of horizontal and vertical velocities can be added
together to get the actual velocity where the projectile is moving at
any point in time
• The two components must be treated separately, you can link them
together by Pythagorean theorem
• Both the horizontal and vertical displacements, velocities, and
accelerations DO NOT affect each other
• Time is the only quantity that is the same for both components
Summary and Conclusion
-Today we learned how to analyze and predict the
motion of projectiles
-Remember, the key to mastering projectile motion is
understanding its components and how they interact.
