What is a steam-driven generators?
• The steam generator, however, is best described as a machine that converts the
produced kinetic energy by the steam turbine into electrical energy . The coil of the
water used inside the generator spin inside a magnetic field which causes electric
current to flow through the wire.
What is a
steam-driven
generator?
(cont’d)
• When a steam turbine is
connected to the
generator, it produces
electrical energy and is
called collectively as a
steam-driven generator.
In a steam-driven generator, heat is generated
from a source, commonly, a water source.
Typically, there is a boiler which contains water;
How does the boiler is then heated and as a result, steam is
produced at a high temperature and pressure.
PROS CONS
• It uses a renewable source of energy • Steam production can be paused as a
(water) to produce a by-product, steam, result from a shortage of water from the
and a primary product, electricity. water supply or source.
Types of Steam
Turbines
There are two basic types of steam turbines, impulse turbines and reaction
turbines; whose blades are designed to control the speed, direction and
pressure of the steam as it passes through the turbine. The generator is
attached to the turbine and when the turbine blades rotate, it makes the
generator work on the principle of magnetic induction and creates electricity.
The method of retrieving the electrical energy depends on how it will be used.
The steam is condensed usually into a condenser. Therefore, a boiler, steam
turbine, generator and condenser form the main components in a steam
powered generator plant.
Types of Steam Turbines Cont’d
• Impulse turbines are turbines where the rotor spins because of a high force or
the direct push of steam on the blades while reaction turbines are turbines
where the rotor spins because of a reaction force instead of an impact or
impulse force.
• The reactive force comes from the change in steam pressure
energy as the steam leaves the blades. This method generally
operates at a higher efficiency than Impulse Turbines.
