• What is the order of the
8 planets?
• Who declared Pluto as a
dwarf planet and why?
• Why is Venus called
Earth’s sister planet?
• Which is the fastest
spinning planet?
LO-To describe the structure of
Earth.

Layers of Earth
AFL
1. ________________is the middle layer of
Earth.
2. Continents and oceans lie in
_________layer.
3. Outer core is made up of ___________
and __________
4. Crust is made of solid and molten rocks.
True or false
LO-To list important facts about the sun
• The sun is the center of the solar system.
• Is the ultimate source of energy.
• Inner core consists of hydrogen and helium
• Outer layer consists of hydrogen gas.
• Thin layer of atmosphere around the sun is called
corona.
• It is an inexhaustible source of energy
Topic- Moon
LO-To describe the structure of the moon
• Earth has just one moon – a rocky, cratered place, roughly a
quarter the size of Earth and an average of 3,84,000 km away.
• The Moon does not shine with its own light. It simply reflects
light coming from the Sun.
• The Moon has almost no atmosphere and only about one-
sixth of Earth’s gravity.
• The rise and fall of the tides on Earth is caused by the Moon.
• The Moon is Earth's only permanent natural satellite.
Astronauts
An astronaut is someone who is trained to travel in a spacecraft,
live in space and carry out scientific experiments.

Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins were the astronauts
on Apollo 11 who first landed on the moon on July 20,1969
AFL
Q1.Moon’s surface is uneven-Give reason
Ans. It has many craters.
Q2.Why is there no life on moon?
Ans. Moon has no atmosphere due to less gravity so
there is no water and hence without water and air life
is not possible.
Q3.Name the first spacecraft that landed on the Moon.
Ans. Apollo II.
Topic- Phases of Moon.
LO-To identify the phases of moon and explain lunar
month.
Q1.What is a lunar month?
It’s the duration between successive new moons. Also called
a lunation or synodic month, it has a mean period of roughly 29
1/2 days

LO-To explain the occurrence of
eclipses
• Solar Eclipse

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes

in front of the Sun causing a shadow to fall on
certain portions of the Earth. The eclipse is not
seen from every place on Earth, but only from
the locations where the shadow falls. From
these locations, it appears as if the Sun has
gone dark.
Types of Solar Eclipses
• Depending on what part of the shadow you
are located in, there are three types of
eclipses
• We should warn you here to never look
directly at a solar eclipse. Even though it
appears darker, the harmful rays of the Sun
can still damage your eyes.
Health and safety tip-Don't Look at A Solar
Eclipse directly.
Types of Solar Eclipses
• Total - A total eclipse is where the Sun is
covered completely by the Moon. The portion
of the Earth that is in the umbra experiences a
total eclipse.
• Partial - A partial eclipse is when only a
portion of the Sun is blocked by the Moon. It
occurs when the observer is within the
penumbra.
Lunar Eclipse
• A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes
through the Earth's shadow. Lunar eclipses
have types as solar eclipses
Key Vocabulary
1. Orbit - The path of the Moon around the Earth.
2. Rotate - The Earth spins around, like a top, about its
axis once each day.
3. Waning – appears to shrink
4. Waxing – appears to be growing
5. Gibbous - Swollen on one side
6. Crescent – less than ½ the moon is visible.
7. Revolve- the motion of one object around another ( the
moon revolves around Earth)
HOTS-

1-Why does a solar eclipse always occur on a new moon day and a lunar eclipse on a
full moon day?

Ans. A solar eclipse can only take place at the phase of new moon, when
the moon passes directly between the sun and Earth and its shadows fall upon Earth's
surface. A lunar Eclipse happens when the moon travels into earth's shadow and the
earth is between the moon and sun.
2.Why are astronauts unable to hear each other’s voice on the moon?
Ans. Moon has no atmosphere and sound needs a medium to travel.
Due to absence of air on moon, sound cannot travel so astronauts cannot hear each
other.
3. Will we be able to drink juice using a straw on the moon?
Ans. We cannot drink juice using a straw on moon, because to sip the juice
with a straw we need atmospheric pressure and moon has no atmospheric pressure
