BAND 9 IELTS ESSAY SAMPLE
Thanks to globalisation, multinational conglomerates have entered the local markets. They
have huge marketing budgets to promote their products and attract buyers. Unfortunately, the
aggressive marketing strategies employed by big conglomerates lead to the demise of local shops.
However, local store owners can counter this attack by improving the quality of their products and
offering personalised services.
Global business giants now have their outlets even in small villages. Since they offer huge
discounts on most products, they can easily attract buyers. At first glance, this may seem beneficial
for the customers but it really is not. The presence of international retailers in the local market hurts
local businesses and thus the local economy. For example, many local artisans have lost their
livelihood because their products have no buyers. Instead of buying their handmade products, people
now prefer to buy the factory made goods that look more attractive. If local people lose their
livelihood, eventually the purchasing power of the local community will diminish.
The only way for local businesses to compete with international giants is to offer
personalised services. While it is true that local traders cannot offer the kind of discounts or offers
that multinational giants offer, they know their customers better. It is also possible for them to
understand the exact needs of their target group. This knowledge actually puts them in a better
position to cater to the specific needs of their buyers. In addition to this, the local businessmen should
try to improve the quality of their products. This is essential to ensure that their customers will return.
The government also needs to intervene and prevent multinational giants from entering certain
sectors.
To conclude, when international companies woo local customers with great discounts and
offers, the local economy suffers the most. However, local businessmen can overcome this threat by
offering customized solutions to their buyers.

VOCABULARY MEANING

medical advances: những tiến bộ trong y học

pragmatic solutions: các giải pháp thực tiễn
filial piety: lòng hiếu thảo
dependents: người phụ thuộc
to be synonymous with: đồng nghĩa với
economic challenges: thách thức kinh tế
pecuniary support: sự giúp đỡ về tiền bạc
stimulate economic activities: kích thích, thúc đẩy các hoạt động kinh tế
formulate policies: xây dựng chính sách
out of working age: ngoài độ tuổi lao động
taxable income: thu nhập chịu thuế
declining health: sức khoẻ suy giảm
tax incentives: ưu đãi thuế
Recent research has shown that human life
expectancy has increased considerably over the past
decades due in part to medical advances and
accessibility to healthcare facilities, which leads to the
phenomenon of people enjoying longer life after
retirement. This issue, however, is believed to have
some negative consequences and then requires
specific pragmatic solutions.
Initially, some potential problems are resulting from
people living longer, one of which is creating a burden on their family.
It should be noted that taking care of retired parents is considered the
responsibility of children as a way of showing their filial piety,
especially in Eastern countries like Vietnam or China. This, however,
unintentionally exerts huge pressure in terms of finance on working
adults of the family owing to the increasing number of
their dependents. Another issue worth mentioning is that a higher
proportion of people of retirement age is synonymous with more
social pensions claimed each year and these are usually viewed as a
cost to the government. This process is also expected to pose a number
of economic challenges. To elaborate, pecuniary support to the aged
members of society puts downward pressure on the national potential
growth since a larger amount of public spending is allocated to paying
pensions rather than stimulating economic activities.
Were no effective actions to be carried out, the
situation would not be improved. Great efforts are required from the
government, who have the authority to formulate suitable policies.
Specifically, they can provide working adults with incentives to
look after their elderly family members. For example, in Vietnam,
people can apply for personal income tax reductions by registering
qualifying dependents who are out of working age. The allowance
is 4.4 million VND per month per dependent, which will be
deducted when calculating the taxable income. A second measure
would be simply raising the retirement age by up to five to seven
years. Many worries those of that age would not be able to work
due to declining health, nevertheless, with modern advanced
healthcare systems, people tend to be much healthier than before.
As a result, the length of working life can be adjusted accordingly.
To recapitulate, the burden on the
family and pension system is an unavoidable
problem that will happen when people live
longer after they retire. Only when appropriate
approaches such as offering tax incentives and
increasing working age are adopted can the
situation be handled.
