Introduction:
• In solar energy consumption there are more breakthroughs on the horizon for solar PV
plants to enable them and to produce electricity even more efficiently.
• In order to maximize the power from the solar panel, the panel should face the sun all
time.
• In this project, sun tracking system which will help the solar panels to generate
maximum power.
• So, our system has two steps, first is to detect the position of sun and second is to move
along with it.

Problem Statement:
 Solar panels are fixed and the movement of sun over the horizon means that the solar panel
does not get maximum energy most of the time.
 For tracking purpose, Open CV and camera are used to capture the images. Depending on
the image resolution solar panel rotates, hence power is wasted to drive the tilting actuator
back and forth for during its searching mode.

Objectives:
 To track the direction of sun light through rotating solar panel by using Arduino and
to generate the maximum power through solar panels.

• The main objective of this paper is to develop a microcontroller-based solar panel

tracking system.
• Which will keep the solar panels aligned with the Sun in order to maximize in
harvesting solar power.
• The sun tracker system is a hybrid hard-ware and software prototype designed around
Programmable Intelligent Computer(PIC), which automatically provides best
alignment of solar panel with the sun.

• When the intensity of light is decreasing, this system automatically changes its direction to
get maximum intensity.
• Light dependent photo resistors are used as the sensors of the solar tracker. For rotating the
appropriate position of the panel, a stepper motor is used.
• The main theme of our project is to rotate the panel automatically by using sensors and
stepper motor.
• This design is covered for a single axis and is designed for residential use. Finally, the
project is able to track and follow the Sun intensity in order to get maximum power at the
output regardless motor speed.

 To get an efficient solar tracker system, a small solar panel is used with a stepper
motors. This system can be installed anywhere in the world without knowing the sun
directions and seasons.
 Mirror is used as booster to maximize the efficiency. The whole frame will travel
circularly and the mirror will travel from south to north and vice-versa.
 The prototype is considered around a programmed microcontroller which controls the
system by communicating with sensors and motor driver based on movement of the sun.
 The performance and characteristics of the solar tracker are experimentally analyzed.
 Optimization by tracking the path of the sun is a technique that makes it possible to
better exploit photovoltaic cells.

Methodology:
• It keeps the panel in front of sun until that is invisible.
• The unique feature of this system is that instead of taking the earth as its reference, it takes
the sun as a guiding source.
• Its active sensors constantly monitor the sunlight and motor is used to rotate the panel
towards the direction where the intensity of sunlight is maximum.
• The whole system is controlled by the microcontroller based control panel.
• In case the sun becomes invisible e.g. in cloudy weather, the panel sensor can’t detect the
sun. After a while when the cloud vanishes, it will scan the sky and again aligned to face the
sun vertically, by this process maximum efficiency can get throughout the whole day.
• The solar panel uses photovoltaic cells (PV cells). The PV cells detect the light intensity
and convert light energy to electrical energy.

• Every time the tracker adjusts the panel perpendicular to the Sun so more sunlight
strikes the solar panel, less light is reflected. Hence, it absorbs more energy which
can be converted into power.
• In this Prototype, we are using the LDR sensor to detect the light(sun) intensity
and Servo motors for automatic rotation of the panel using the Arduino
microcontroller.
