PHILIPPINES
MARCH 31- APRIL 1 1521
- The first mass in the philippines was held in manzaua
(limasawa)
- It was attended by Magellan the Raia Colambu, Raia
Siaui, Spanish voyagers, and local islanders.
- Conducted near the shores of the island, the Holy First
Mass marked the Birth of Roman Catholicism in the
Philippines. Colambu and Siaiu were the first native of
the archipelago, which was not yet named
“Philippines”
- After the conclusion of the mass, some of the men
took communion, then they had a cross carried in, and
the nails and the crown.
- They set that cross on the summit of the highest
mountain, so that on seeing it every morning, they might
adore it; and if they did that, neither thunder, lightning,
nor storms would harm them in the least
- The captain-general also asked them whether they were
Moros [Muslims] or heathen, or what was their belief.
They replied that they worshiped nothing [had no other
worship] but that they raised their clasped hands and
their face to the sky, and that they called their god
"Abba.”
- After the cross was erected in the position, each of them
repeated a Pater Noster and an Ave Maria, and adored the
cross; and the Kings, Colambu and Siaiu, did the same.
- Magellan and his men stayed for 7 more days.
- The mass was Officiated
by father Pedro de
Valderrama
- Was sent ashore with
some men to prepare for a
mass and to inform “Rajah
Kolambu” through an
interpreter.
- He was the andalusian
chaplain of the fleet, the
only priest then.
Magellan’s Claims of the Philippines
● For spain, planting a cross is like planting a different
flag lon our island, Magellan Claimed the island and
called it “Archipelago of San Lazaro”
THE
LANDING IN
CEBU
APRIL 7 1521
- Magellan landed on Zubu now called Cebu, Magellan’s
crew fired their cannon that surprised the locals.
- The king of Zubu (Cebu) wanted Magellan to pay tribute
to them but Magellan refused and told the translator that
they are working for the king of spain and seem with war
- Magellan ordered Enrique to tell the cebuanos that it is
their tradition from spain that means it is a sign that the
captain wants to be their friend, (Enrique was a Malaysian
and slave of Magellan that served him as his translator).
- The cebuanos become friends with them. They gave rice,
wild boar, chickens. And sheep, to Magellan and magellan
trade cloth. Salamingora or cap to them.
APRIL 8 and 14 1521
- Magellan and the Chiefs and Kings of Zubu Gathered on
the open square and agreed to have a blood pact,
another cross was planted.
- 800 more souls were baptized including the king that was
named “King Carlos” and afternoon, her wife was also
baptized and named “Reyna Juana”
- Magellan ordered the baptized citizens to destroy their
anitos and change it into a cross
- Magellan gave Reyna Juana a statue, the statue of St.
Niño
- Magellan promised Raja Humabon to fight all their rivals
that is led by Lapu-Lapu.
Anitos
- Anito, also spelled anitu, refers to ancestor spirits,
nature spirits, and deities in the indigenous Philippine
folk religions from the precolonial age to the present,
although the term itself may have other meanings and
associations depending on the Filipino ethnic group.
THE BATTLE
OF MACTAN
APRIL 27-28 1521
- Magellan sent a message to Lapu-Lapu that if they
acknowledge the king of spain and king Carlos (Raja
Humabon) and give them tribute, they will become their
allies but if not they will declare war. Lapu-Lapu rejected.
- Magellan decided that they will attack at sunrise. Raja
Humabon tried to give help but Magellan declined.
- From their Gallion, 49 spaniard soldier walked from the water
because the ship cannot go to the seaside.
- Lapu-Lapu’s force consist of 3 groups of men estimated to be
around 1500 soldiers surround them that was shaped in a
triangular manner. Screaming as they attack Magellan’s
Forces
- The spanish soldiers were overwhelmed by the massive
number of stones, muds, and spears that wa thrown to them.
- Magellan was hit by a poison arrow and tell his crew to
retreat. 6-8 men stay beside magellan to fight
- Magellan was speared in the face but he retaliated. But was
hit in the arm by the sword and kampilan into the left leg
- Using the interpreter of magellan, enrique. Raja Humabon
invited the spain soldiers into a feast while being
accompanied by ladies
- The cebuanos then poisoned them because they raped some
women before the battle of mactan.
- The survivors left, with only men left to crew the two ships,
they burned the Conception and continue the search for
spice islands.
