INTRODUCTION
Ferdinand Magellan's expedition is one of the most significant
voyages in world history, marking the first successful
circumnavigation of the Earth. In this presentation, we will
explore three pivotal moments from Magellan's journey in the
Philippines:
- The First mass in the Philippines
- The Landing in Cebu
- The Battle of Mactan

Through this presentation, we will take a closer look at how


these events shaped the history of the Philippines and

First Mass in the
Philippines Held?
Who officiated the first
mass in the philippines?
- The mass was Officiated by
father Pedro de Valderrama
- Was sent ashore with some
men to prepare for a mass and
to inform “Rajah Kolambu”
through an interpreter.
- He was the andalusian
chaplain of the fleet, the only
priest then.
Where and why was the cross
set, and what did they do
after the cross was erected?
Magellan’s Claims of the Philippines
● For spain, planting a cross is like planting a different
flag lon our island, Magellan Claimed the island and
called it “Archipelago of San Lazaro”

CEBU
When did Magellan landed on
Cebu and what did they do
when they are in it?
The Landing In Cebu.
- Magellan arrived in Cebu, the heart of a large
trading network in the Visayas region.
- Initial meeting with Rajah Humabon, the local
ruler.
- Warm reception and exchange of gifts between
Magellan’s crew and Humabon.
Who is Enrique De Malacca?
- A malaysian and slave of Magellan
that served him as his translator
- He plays a pivotal role as an
interpreter on the journey to the
Moluccas Spice Islands, where the
inhabitants speak the Malay
language.
- Disappears from history days after
the battle of mactan
“Diplomacy and Alliances”
- Rajah Humabon, ruler of Cebu,
sought an alliance with Magellan
to strengthen his position over
rival leaders in the region.
- Magellan introduced Christianity
to the locals and another cross
was planted
- around 800 Cebuano native souls
were baptized
- Promise of military protection and
technological assistance from the
Spaniards.
“The Conversion to Christianity”
- Humabon and his people were baptized by Magellan’s
chaplain, Father Pedro de Valderrama.
- Humabon’s Christian name: Don Carlos (in honor of King
Charles I of Spain), and her wife: Reyna Juana
- Magellan ordered the baptized citizens to destroy their anitos
and change it into a cross
- Magellan gave Reyna Juana a statue, the statue of St. Niño
- Magellan promised Raja Humabon to fight all their rivals that is
led by Lapu-Lapu.

BATTLE OF
MACTAN
When did the battle of

Magellan’s Defeat and Death
- Magellan’s forces were overwhelmed
by Lapu-Lapu’s warriors.

- Magellan was struck by a bamboo


spear, and tell his crew to retreat. 6-8
men stay beside magellan to fight
- Despite having armor and superior
weapons, Magellan’s men were
outnumbered and unfamiliar with the
terrain.
- His death marked a turning point in
the expedition.
The Aftermath of the Battle
- After Magellan’s death, the surviving members of his crew fled
to Cebu.
- Leadership of the expedition was passed to Juan Sebastián
Elcano
- The Battle of Mactan became a symbol of Filipino resistance
against foreign invaders.
- The survivors left, with only men left to crew the two ships,
they burned the Conception and continue the search for spice
islands.
- Lapu-Lapu Became the first Filipino Hero
