UNIT 1:
VECTORS IN TWO DIMENSIONS
VECTORS IN TWO DIMENSIONS
1 Calculate the appropriate components of the
following forces. First draw a diagram (not necessarily to
scale) to help you.
1.1 Calculate the horizontal and vertical components
of a 550 N force pulling upwards at an angle of 40° to
the horizontal.
Fx = F cos40°
= 550 cos40°
= 421,32 N horizontally
VECTORS IN TWO DIMENSIONS
Fy = F sin40°
= 550 sin40°
= 353,53 N vertically upward
1.2 Calculate the horizontal and vertical components of a
280 N force pulling upwards at an
angle of 33° to the horizontal.
Fx = F cos33°
= 280 cos33°
= 234,83 N horizontally
VECTORS IN TWO DIMENSIONS
Fy = F sin33°
= 280 sin33°
= 152,5 N vertically downward
1.3 Calculate the horizontal and vertical components of a
350 N force pushing downwards at
an angle of 55° to the horizontal.
Fx = F cos55°
= 350 cos55°
= 200,75 N horizontally
VECTORS IN TWO DIMENSIONS
Fy = F sin55°
= 350 sin55°
= 286,70 N vertically downward
1.4 Calculate the horizontal and vertical components of a
280 N force pushing downwards
at an angle of 25° to the
horizontal.
VECTORS IN TWO DIMENSIONS
Fx = F cos25°
= 280 cos25°
= 253,77 N horizontally

Fy = F sin25°
= 280 sin25°
= 118,33 N vertically downward
VECTORS IN TWO DIMENSIONS
1.5 Calculate the horizontal and vertical components of a
550 N force pulling upwards at an angle of 40° to the
vertical.
Fx = F cos50°
= 550 cos50°
= 353,53 N horizontally
Fy = F sin50°
= 550 sin50°
= 421,32 N vertically downward
VECTORS IN TWO DIMENSIONS
1.6 Calculate the horizontal and vertical components of a
150 N force pushing downwards at an
angle of 20° to the vertical.
Fx = F cos70°
= 150 cos70°
= 51,30 N horizontally

Fy = F sin70°
= 150 sin70°
= 140,95 N vertically downward
VECTORS IN TWO DIMENSIONS
2 Calculate the appropriate components of the following
forces. First draw a diagram (not necessarily to scale) to
help you.
2.1 Calculate the components parallel and perpendicular to
the plane of a 150 N gravitational force acting on an object

on a slope at 20° to the horizontal.

Fg‖ = Fg sinθ
= 150 sin20°
= 51,3 N parallel down the slope
VECTORS IN TWO DIMENSIONS
Fg⊥ = Fg cosθ
= 150 cos20°
= 140,95 N perpendicular to the slope
2.2 Calculate the components parallel and perpendicular to
the plane of a 30 N gravitational force acting on an
object on a slope at 30° to the horizontal.
Fg‖= Fg sinθ
= 30 sin30°
= 15 N parallel down the slope
VECTORS IN TWO DIMENSIONS
Fg⊥ = Fg cosθ
= 30 cos30°
= 25,98 N perpendicular to the slope
2.3 Calculate the components parallel and perpendicular to
the
plane of a 200 kg crate on a slope
of 30° to the horizontal.
Fg‖ = Fg sinθ
= (200)(9,8)sin30°
= 1 960 sin30°
VECTORS IN TWO DIMENSIONS
Fg⊥ = Fg cosθ
= (200)(9,8)cos30°
= 1 960 cos30°
= 1 697,41 N perpendicular to the slope
2.4 Calculate the components parallel and perpendicular to
the plane of a 1 000 kg car on a slope at 10° to the
horizontal.
VECTORS IN TWO DIMENSIONS
Fg‖ = Fg sinθ
= (1 000)(9,8)sin10°
= 9 800 sin10°
= 1 701,75 N parallel down the slope

Fg⊥ = Fg cosθ
= (1 000)(9,8)cos10°
= 9 800 cos10°
= 9 651,12 N perpendicular to
the slope
