 There are three types of Computer according to

function

1: Analog Computer

2: Digital Computer

3: Hybrid Computer
What is the difference between
these watches ??
1. Analog Computer
• An analog computer does not operate with digital signals
• A computer that operates on data which is in the form of
continuously variable physical quantities such as
electrical current, voltage or resistance, mechanical
movements etc.
• The analog computer is an
electronic or hydraulic
device that is designed to
handle input in terms of, for
example, voltage levels or
hydraulic pressures, rather
than numerical data.
• In a typical electronic analog computer, the inputs are
converted into voltages that may be added or multiplied using
specially designed circuit elements. The answers are
continuously generated for display or for conversion to
another desired
• form.

Examples
• Analog clock measures time by the distance of the
hand of clock around a dial.

• The speed of a car is measured by speedometer.

• Thermometer measures the length of a mercury

column.

• Analog processor is used at petrol stations, which

indicate the quantity of petrol delivered
2. Digital Computer
• A digital computer has data in the form of digits , rather than
the physical quantities used in analog computers.
• It’s input must be discrete rather than continuous. Everything
is described in two states i-e either ON or OFF. The number 1
represents “on” and 0 represents the “off” state.

• It is designed to process data in

numerical form, its circuits perform
directly the mathematical operations
of addition, subtraction, multiplication,
and division. The numbers operated
on by a digital computer are
expressed in the binary system,
binary digits, or bits, are 0 and 1.
 Digital computers are used for reservations systems,
scientific investigation, data-processing and word-
processing applications, desktop publishing, electronic
games, and many other purposes.

Examples

1. Digital watch

2. Score board that directly count

discrete values such as the time left
to play and the score of each team
 Hybrid computer is the outcome of the integration of
analog computer components & digital components. This
integration is obtained by digital –to-analog converter and
analog –to-digital converter.
 A hybrid computer may use or produce analog data or
digital data.

 It accepts a continuously varying input which is then

converted into a set of discrete values for digital
processing.

 Hybrid Machines are generally used in scientific

applications or in controlling industrial processes.
Classification of digital computers:

 General-purpose digital computer.

 Special purpose digital computer.

General-purpose digital computer:

This is also called all-purpose digital computer. It can be used for
any type of application
Example: Computers that are used for payroll, graphics, analysis.

Special purpose digital computer:

These computers designed to solve problems of a restricted type
i.e. designed to be especially efficient in a certain class of
applications.

Example: Computer installed in washing machine
