INTRODUCTION
• Concurrent Embedded Mixed Methods Study is an approach to research that involves
the simultaneous collection and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data within
a single study (Creswell et al., 2018)

• This method allows researchers to gain a comprehensive understanding of complex

research questions, by integrating the strengths of both quantitative and qualitative
methods.

• Qualitative data can be embedded in quantitative data or vice versa.

• The embedding of qualitative data within quantitative data often involves collecting
qualitative data to help explain or provide context to quantitative data.
AUTHORS AND HISTORY
• The concept of Concurrent Embedded Mixed Methods Study was first
introduced by Creswell and Plano-Clark in 2007 in their book titled
“Designing and Conducting Mixed Methods Research.”

• The history of Concurrent Embedded Mixed Methods Study evolved

from the growing recognition of the limitations of single and other
mixed method research designs and the need for;
• integration of qualitative and quantitative methods in addressing
complex research questions.
CHARACTERISTICS OF CONCURRENT
EMBEDDED MIXED METHOD
The following are the characteristics of Concurrent Embedded Mixed
Methods Study:

• The study utilizes both qualitative and quantitative methods.

• The data is collected and analyzed simultaneously.
• Integration of one method into the other.
• Data triangulation(data cross-checking) to enhance validity and
reliability.
Reasons for choosing Concurrent embedded
over other mixed methods

1.To address complex research questions.

2. To triangulate data.

3. To provide a more in-depth analysis

4. To explore underlying reasons

5. For more accurate predictions

Studies that have used concurrent
embedded mixed method
Study 1: Livelihood options/strategies in Wa Municipality in Ghana Bonye et al.,
(2020)
Studies that have used
concurrent embedded mixed
method Cont’d
Study 2: Backpackers' experiences with smartphone usage in Ghana (Dayour,
2019).
Studies that have used
concurrent embedded mixed

Study 3: Prevalence of multiple addictions and current treatment by
drug treatment centres in Durban, South Africa Keen et al., (2015)
• Used concurrent mixed-methods design
• Screened patients admitted to rehabilitation centres for gambling and
sex addiction and conducted focus group discussions with staff
• Found that 54% of participants had either sex or gambling addiction
and 24% had both addictions which were not assessed or treated by
current treatment programmes.
Which fields of research use the
concurrent embedded mixed
method?
• The concurrent embedded research design has many applications, in
different fields of scientific research. Some of these fields include

• Health Sciences

• Social Sciences

• Public Health

• Development Studies
Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages
1. The approach can provide a comprehensive understanding of a
complex research question.
2. The method can triangulates data to increase validity and reliability.
3. Data integration enhances the researchers' insight into the research
question
4. It allows for more in-depth analysis of data.
5. Quantitative data can be used to validate qualitative data and vice
versa.
Disadvantages and Recommendations
Disadvantages
1. It’s time consuming, labor intensive, and expensive.
2. Complexity in analysis.
Recommendations
3. Ensure that there are adequate resources and time
4. Researchers must have the necessary knowledge and experience in
analyzing mixed methods.
