I. SENTENCE STRESS
1.1. DEFINITION: Sentence stress
means some words in a sentence
are said louder or stronger than
others.
1.2. WHEN & WHICH WORDS are stressed
in a sentence
Content words are usually stressed in a sentence because
they carry the main meaning.
These include: Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Adverbs, Negative
auxiliaries.
Function words are generally not stressed because they
serve a grammatical purpose rather than carrying important
meaning.
These include: Articles, Prepositions, Auxiliary verbs,
Pronouns, Conjunctions.
Example
I don't think he should get the job. I'm not sure he'll get that job.
I don't think he should get that job. Somebody else should get that job.
I don't think he should get that job. He should get another job.
