Recycling Efforts
• Utilization of Coal Ash - SMC Global Power recycles coal ash primarily as an aggregate for cement
manufacturing, using it as a supplementary material and a partial substitute for clinker. This practice
helps reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, although coal ash cannot fully replace clinker.
• Recycling Rates - The Limay Power Plant successfully recycles 80-90% of its coal ash, while the
Malita Power Plant recycles 70-80%. This is achieved by supplying recycled coal ash to cement
manufacturers like National Cement Corporation (NCC) and Southern Concrete.
Environmental Compliance
• Adherence to Standards - The company strictly follows DENR’s Water Quality Guidelines and
General Effluent Standards to ensure responsible management of coal ash and compliance with
environmental regulations.
These initiatives reflect SMC Global Power’s commitment to sustainability, waste reduction, and
community involvement while addressing the environmental impacts of coal-fired power generation.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE UN
SDGS
At San Miguel, there are many ways the sustainability programs and initiatives align with the global goals.
The following shows how the sustainability agenda and material ESG topics correspond and contribute to the UN
SDGs.
ENVIRONMENT
RESPONSIBILITIES
San Miguel Corporation (SMC) has implemented various programs, projects, and initiatives to
reduce its environmental footprint and transition toward sustainability.
• Circular Economy Approach by 2040 - SMC aims to establish a Circular Economy Approach by 2040, ensuring that
more of the waste it generates is reused, recycled, or repurposed, and increasing the component of recycled materials
used in its production processes.
• Net Zero by 2050 - SMC has committed to achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 in response to
the urgent global call to cut carbon emissions.
- Increasing 1,200 MW liquefied natural gas (LNG) - Reducing carbon emissions in the Bataan oil refinery
capacity and completing 1,000 MWh of combined through plant reconfiguration, replacement of thermal
battery energy storage system (BESS) projects power plants with steam generating facilities, and
nationwide recovery and maximized utilization of fuel gas
- Leveraging new technologies to develop cement - Recovering carbon dioxide (CO2) from the fermentation
products with lower clinker factor but same concrete process and purifying it for use in the manufacturing
strength process in Beer and Spirits divisions
- Utilizing supplementary cementitious materials like - Utilizing anaerobic reactors to treat wastewater and
natural pozzolan and fly ash to reduce the clinker recover methane from the anaerobic treatment of
component in cement products wastewater to use as biogas to fire up boilers in Beer
- Expanding the use of solar and biomass to address and Spirits businesses
energy requirements and employing new energy- - Adding limestone in coal-fired boilers to reduce GHG
efficient processes and technologies emissions and employing wet scrubbers to reduce
- Injecting plastic waste from cement plant operations pollution
into the pyro-processing stage of cement production
• Non-GHG Emission Reduction Initiatives - Investing in
to harness its useful heat for clinker manufacture advanced and efficient technologies in thermal power plants
- Substituting traditional fuel with alternative fuels like to maintain emissions well below the limits set for SOx, NOx,
and PM by the DENR and World Bank.
plastics, municipal solid waste, rubbers, and used
tires in cement production to cut traditional fuel usage
by up to 50%
• Energy Conservation Measures
- Creating energy conservation teams in each business unit
- Including power index in key performance indicators of businesses
- Converting lighting to LED
- Replacing air-conditioning units with inverter type
- Using solar panels for streetlights and office/warehouse lighting
• Charting A Low Carbon Future - Our battery energy storage system (BESS)--first and largest grid scale network in the
country, facilities will support the country’s power grid by storing excess energy and injecting required power within
milliseconds when needed, ensuring power quality and stability all over the country. The BESS will address one of the
major limitations of renewable energy—the intermittence of solar, wind, hydropower, and other renewables. Battery
systems can support renewable energy (RE) sources and help bring about more renewable investments in the future.
• Balancing Act
- HELE Technology - High-efficiency; low-emission (HELE) technologies are cutting-edge coal technology designed
to increase production efficiency while lowering the GHG and non-GHG emissions per amount of power generated
by our coal-fired power plants.
- CFB Technology - circulating fluidized bed (CFB) technology, used in the combustion of solid fuels, such as coal
and biomass, is another way we produce power in a more environment-friendly manner.
The following listed below are several key programs, initiatives, and projects for
sustainable resource management, particularly in energy and water sectors.
Energy Initiatives
