Introduction to Compound Sentences

Definition: A compound sentence is a sentence with two


or more independent clauses connected by a
coordinating conjunction or a semicolon (;).

Purpose: Used to show equal importance of ideas,


contrast, or cause and effect.

Rule: Use a semicolon to join two closely related
independent clauses when the ideas are strongly
connected.
