PURITY

Pure Elements
● If element is pure; it means that every one of its atoms is exactly the same and made of
just one type of atom.
● An alloy means substances made by mixing 2 or more elements.
● The unit measurement for purity is carat.
● Pure gold is 24 carat.
● If an alloy is 18 carat of gold, it means there are 75% of gold in it.

● For silver, it is usually marked with the number of part per 1000.
For example, the silver ring has the mark 925. That means the ring contain 92.5% silver

You can see that the colour changes from slightly coppery to yellow-gold
Diamonds
● Diamonds are made from the element carbon
● Pure diamonds are colourless and translucent (lets the light through).
● If the diamonds have other elements mixed in with the carbon atoms, they
can be different colours
Yellow diamonds are made of carbon and nitrogen
● Blue diamonds are made of carbon atoms and boron.
● Green diamonds are the rarest diamonds. It made of carbon, nitrogen,
nickel or hydrogen.
Seawater
● Seawater is made up of water ans various salts such as sodium chloride
● Seawater also contains magnesium chloride, sodium sulfate, calcium chloride
and other salts.
Pure Products
● Simple chemical reaction produce only one product

● Other reaction produce two or more products
