Data communication
• Data communication refers to the exchange of data
between a source and a receiver via form of
transmission media
• The meanings of source and receiver are very simple.
• Source: device that transmits the data is known as
source
• Receiver: device that receives the transmitted data is
known as receiver.
• Data communication aims at the transfer of data
• maintenance of the data during the process
• actual generation of the information at the source and
receiver.
Data communication

•Simple communication
Components of data communication
system
A Communication system has following components:
1.Message: It is the information or data to be
communicated. It can consist of text, numbers, pictures,
sound or video or any combination of these.
2. Sender: It is the device/computer that generates and
sends that message
3.Receiver: It is the device or computer that receives the
message. The location of receiver computer is generally
different from the sender computer.
4.Medium: It is the channel or physical path through
which the message is carried from sender to the receiver.
The medium can be wired like twisted pair wire, coaxial
cable, fiber-optic cable or wireless like laser, radio waves,
and microwaves.

Elements of data
communication
Types Of communication
1.Wire-based Communication
• Data is transmitted through physical transmission
• Different physical medias are twisted pair cable &
fiber optics cable
2.Wireless Communication
• Data is transmitted through wireless medium
• Different wireless media are radio waves,
microwaves, infrared etc.
• More convenient media than wire based
Properties of good Communication
System
• Delivery
o Must deliver data in correct form
o Data must be received by intended device
o Example: mail message
• Accuracy
o Accuracy is an important property
o System must deliver data accurately
o No alteration no loss
• Timeliness
o Data must be delivered with out any delay
Data Transmission Mode
• The way in which data is transmitted from one place
to another is called data transmission mode.
• It is also called the data communication mode.
• It indicates the direction of flow of information.
• Sometimes, data transmission modes are also
referred to as directional modes.
• There are three data transmission modes.
• Simplex mode
• Half-Duplex Traffic
• Full-Duplex Traffic
Data Transmission Mode
• Simplex Mode
• In simplex mode, data is transmitted in only one
direction.
• A terminal can only send data and cannot receive it
• it can only receive data but cannot send data.
Example
• In computer system, the keyboard, monitor and
printer are examples of simplex devices. The
keyboard can only be used to enter data into
computer, while monitor and printer can only accept
(display/print) output.

Data Transmission Mode
Half-Duplex Traffic
• In half-duplex mode, data can be transmitted
in both directions but only in one direction at
a time.
• In this mode, data is sent and received
alternatively.
• It is like a one-lane bridge where two-way
traffic must give way in order to cross the
other.
Data Transmission Mode

• In half-duplex mode, at a time only one end

transmits data while other end receives.

simultaneously

Full-Duplex Traffic
• In full-duplex mode, data can be
transmitted in both directions at the
same time on the same channel.
• It is the fastest directional mode of
communication.
• The telephone communication system is
an example of full-duplex
communication mode

Forms of Data
Transmission
There are two forms of data Transmission
1)Digital Data Transmission
2)Analog Data Transmission
Digital Data Transmission
• A sequence of voltage presented in binary form
• In the form of electric pulses of ON AND OFF
• Signals are in discrete form
• Digital signals are faster and efficient
• Provide high transmission speed
• Provide high quality voice-transmission
Forms of Data
Transmission

• Digital Data Transmission

Forms of Data
Transmission
Analog Data Transmission
• Continuous electric signals in the form of
wave
• Form is known as a carrier wave
• Telephone line is most commonly used media
for analog transmission
• Light, sound, radio, and microwave are
examples of analog signals
