How was the world?

• As Spain has claimed many lands in


the Americas, many soldiers and
explorers discovered many lands.
• The Spanish monarch encouraged
explorations and offered grants to
those who lead expeditions.
• The Spanish soldiers were called
“Conquers” or “Conquistadors”
Juan Ponce de León (1513 – Florida)

- He travelled with Columbus in the second


voyage and helped conquer Puerto Rico
- He heard from American Indians about an
island in the north called Bimini; It had a
fountain of youth which made old people
young again.
- After some year, he sat off going to Bimini
and went to explore the lands that are now
of Florida and named it “La Florida as for
“flowers” in Spanish in 1513.
- He is the first Spanish to set foot on the
lands that became part of the United
Hernando Cortés (1519 – Mexico)

- In 1519. he went to Aztec; that is now Mexico with


650 soldiers.
- They landed in the Aztec Capital “Tenochtitlan”.
- American Indians welcomed them and gave them
food because they hated the harsh rule of Aztec.
- An Indian woman called “Malintzin” was their
translator.
- People thought in the light-skinned god who will
come one day and rule them. So, they loved him at
first.

States.

journey. He killed about 11,000 one of the in

died from hunger and others ran away and it
ended in 1542 with only about 300 soldiers
left.
