Pathology Pathologic Terms Morphology - The structure of cells or tissue
Pathologic conditions may cause
morphologic changes that alter normal body tissues in a variety of ways. Pathologic Terms Subtractive, lytic, or destructive Thisoccurs when tissue composition is altered by a decrease in the atomic number of the tissue or the compactness of the cells or by changes in tissue thickness, for example, atrophy from limited use. require a decrease in the exposure technique. Pathologic Terms Atrophy - decrease in size or wasting away of a body part or tissue Pathologic Terms Additive or sclerotic Conversely, some pathologic conditions cause an increase in the normal density of a tissue, resulting in a higher atomic number or increased compactness of cells. require an increase in the exposure technique. Example: Hypertrophy Pathologic Terms Hypertrophy is an increase in the size of cells (or tissues) in response to various stimuli. Pathologic Terms Epidemiology is the investigation of disease in large groups. Prevalenceof a given disease refers to the number of cases found in a given population The incidence of disease refers to the number of new cases found in a given period. Pathologic Terms Endemic - Diseases of high prevalence in an area where a given causative organism is commonly found Endemic - describes a disease that is constantly present in a certain geographic area or in a certain group of people. Forexample, histoplasmosis is a fungal disease of the respiratory system endemic to the Ohio and Mississippi River valleys. Pathologic Terms Pandemic - is a disease outbreak that spreads across countries or continents. Pandemic - High prevalence of a disease over a large area
Epidemic - is the rapid spread of disease to a large number of
patients among a given population within an area in a short period of time. Epidemic – A sudden, widespread occurrence of a disease Epidemic – an outbreak of disease that spreads quickly and affects many individuals at the same time DISEASE CLASSIFICATIONS DISEASE CLASSIFICATIONS Diseases present at birth and resulting from genetic or environmental factors are termed congenital It is estimated that 2% to 3% of all infants born live have one or more congenital abnormalities, although some of these may not be visible until a year or so after birth. DISEASE CLASSIFICATIONS Cleft Lip And Cleft Palate Examples: Cleft lip is a birth defect in which a baby's upper lip doesn’t form completely and has an opening in it.
Cleft palate is a birth defect in which
a baby's palate (roof of the mouth) doesn't form completely and has an opening in it. DISEASE CLASSIFICATIONS Hereditarydiseases are caused by developmental disorders genetically transmitted from either parent to a child through abnormalities of individual genes in chromosomes and are derived from ancestors. Example: Hemophilia is usually an inherited bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot properly. DISEASE CLASSIFICATIONS Degenerative diseases are caused by deterioration of the body. Although they are usually associated with the aging process, some degenerative conditions may exist in younger patients. For instance, an individual may develop a degenerative disease following a traumatic injury, regardless of age. Example : Osteoporosis DISEASE CLASSIFICATIONS
Metabolic disease, any of the diseases or
disorders that disrupt normal metabolism Example : Diabetes mellitus refers to a group of diseases that affect how the body uses blood sugar (glucose). DISEASE CLASSIFICATIONS
Neoplasticdisease results in new, abnormal
tissue growth. Neoplastic diseases are conditions that cause tumor growth. Example: Lymphomas refers to types of cancer that begin in the lymphatic system DISEASE CLASSIFICATIONS
Immunologic diseases – this occurs when
some of our immunologic defenses attack our own bodies. These diseases are also called autoimmune diseases. Example: Rheumatoid arthritis THANK YOU FOR LISTENING
