I can describe separation techniques for mixtures

(STEM_GC11MPIa-b-10)

I can apply simple separation techniques such as distillation,

chromatography. (STEM_GC11MPIa-b-12)
Distillation

It is used in collecting a pure liquid from a

mixture of liquids (soluble solid and liquid)
through the process of evaporation and
condensation.
Simple Distillation

► It use in separation of two miscible liquids with

enough difference in boiling points greater than
70◦C.

For example:
Separating acetone-water mixture
Fractional Distillation
► It is used for separating mixture of two or more
miscible liquids in which the differences in boiling
points are less than 25◦C.

For example:
The separation of different fractions of
petroleum products.
Evaporation

► It is used in separating soluble solid from a liquid.

For example:
Separating salt from salt solution
Filtration

► It is used in separating
insoluble solid from a
liquid.
Centrifugation

► It is the process of separation

of insoluble materials from a
liquid where normal filtration
does not work well.

For example:
Used in diagnostic
laboratories for blood and
urine tests
Centrifuge
Chromatography

It is used in separating components with different affinities

or solubilities to mobile phase (solvent) and stationary
phases (paper).

The various components of the mixture travel at different

speeds, causing them to separate.
Paper Chromatography
Magnetism
► It is used in separation of solid to solid with one part
having magnetic properties.
Decantation
◦It is the process of separating a liquid from a solid by
allowing the solid particles to settle at the bottom.
Use of Separatory Funnel for
Liquid to Liquid Extraction

► It is used for the separation of components of a mixture

between two immiscible liquid phases.

► This separation is based on the differences in the

densities of the liquids.
Separatory Funnel

Example: Separating
kerosene- water mixture
