Session Objectives
• By the end of this session, learners are
expected to be able to;
– Explain the process of recruitment, selection and
induction
– Explain process and principles of performance
management and appraisal
– Explain staff development process
– Explain motivation and retention strategies

Induction Process (1)
• Recruitment process includes forecasting of
manpower, recruitment, selection.
• It also includes interview, orientation, training
and development, remunerations,
performance evaluation, promotion and
transfer

• 1. Recruitment
– Recruitment refers to the process of attracting,
screening, and selecting qualified people for a job
at an organization or firm
– Once the job requirements are clearly stipulated,
the organization invites for applications of the
right candidates

• 2. Selection
– This is the screening step of staffing in which the
solicited applications are screened out and
suitable candidates are appointed as per the
requirements
– Also, includes conducting interview of the desired
candidates

• 3. Induction
– The process in which appointed candidates to a
job are made familiar to the work units and work
environment through the orientation programs
– This process is usually followed by placement
which means putting right man on the right job

• 4. Training and Development
– Training is a part of incentives given to the workers
in order to develop and grow for better
performance
– Training is generally given according to the nature
of activities and scope of expansion of the job.
– Development also includes giving them key and
important jobs as a test or examination in order to
analyze their performances

• 5. Remuneration
– It is a kind of compensation provided monetarily
to the employees for their work performances
– This is given according to the nature of job- skilled
or unskilled, physical or mental
– Remuneration forms an important monetary
incentive for the employees

• 6. Performance Evaluation
– This is regular assessment which is done to
evaluate and supervise work performances, in
order to keep a track or record of the behavior,
attitudes as well as opinions of the workers
towards their jobs
– It is basically concerned with staff development
and growth and should be done in a very positive
manner

• 7. Promotion and Transfer
– Promotion is a type of incentive in which the
worker is shifted from lower to a higher job
demanding bigger responsibilities
– Transferring is shifting the workers to different
work units and branches of the same organization

• ACTIVITY
• Divide in groups 5-7 students
• Each group, choose a leader and a recorder
• Discuss the process and principles of performance
management and appraisal
• Use 15 minutes
• Record your responses
• Present the responses in class for sharing and
clarification
Staff Development Process (1)
• All policies, practices, and procedures used to
develop the knowledge, skills and
competences of staff to improve the
effectiveness and efficiency at workplace
• This can be achieved in a number of ways,
each method work best with a particular type
of staff

• Training
– includes formal and non-formal trainings, all aimed at
developing staff skills

• Job rotation;
– aimed at changing the tasks and roles to learn new things and
applying what has been learnt

• Coaching
– Helps staff understand and perform their job as the more
experienced do

• Mentoring
– Gives opportunity for junior staffs to work with
senior ones and learn from them

• Workshops/committees/working-groups
– Interaction to peers within or outside the
organization is key in developing staff

• Simulations
– One of the ways in learning skills to staffs

• Conferences
– Expand networks and gives more exposure from others

• On-the-job development
– Learning by doing can be undertaken to any staff,
though is good right after training

• Self-study
– not a very popular method but can be used to cement skills
to staff

• 360-degree performance review


– Feedback from everybody involved in what the staff does is
equally important

• Career planning
– be it of short or long term, it also helps in staff development
Motivation and Retention Strategies (1)
• Motivation is the process of stimulating people to
actions to accomplish the goals
• Different strategies can be employed in achieving
motivation at workplace. It includes but not limited to
– Staff appraisal
– Incentives
– Validating good work
– Creating mentorship programs
– Organize activities and events at workplace
• Motivation helps achieving goals and bring about job
satisfaction
Motivation and Retention Strategies (2)
• Retention
– Ability of an organization to retain its employees
• Retention Strategies
– Refer to policies an organization follows to keep
staffs from leaving such organization
– The aim is to hold on of the staffs so that they stay
in their jobs

• There are a number of retention strategies including;
– Appreciating staff
– Encourage open communication
– Developing orientation programs
– Rewarding and recognizing staff
– Encouraging teamwork
– Providing monetary benefits
– Practicing feedback culture
– Altering work responsibilities
– Generating peer-to-peer recognition
