What is Doping?

In competitive sports,
doping refers to the
use of illegal athletic
performance
enhancing drugs by
the athletes.
What is Doping?(2)

• Doping is taken very strictly by

most international sporting
organizations including the
International Olympic
Committee.
What is WADA?

• Th international World
Anti-Doping Agency
(WADA) is an agency
that envisions a world
where all athletes can
participate in a doping-
free sporting
environment.
What is WADA?(2)

WADA is responsible for scientific research,

education, development of anti-doping
capacities, and monitoring of the World Anti-
Doping Code. WADA's governance and
funding are based on equal partnership
between the Sport Movement and
Governments of the world
What is NADA?

• The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADDA) of

India is India's national organization responsible
for promoting, coordinating, and monitoring the
doping control program in sports in all its forms.
• The agency deals with adopting and
implementing anti-doping rules and policies
which conform with the World Anti-Doping
Agency, cooperates with other anti-doping
organizations and promotes anti-doping
research and education
What is NADA?(2)
Why Do Performers Take Drugs?

Athletes take drugs for the following reasons:

1) To enhance their physical performance
in an attempt to prevent them falling
behind other competitors even at the
cost of damaging their health and
risking their sports career.
2) To help them wind down and relax.
Why do Performers Take Drugs?(2)

3) to cope with the pressure and stress

associated with tbheconstant battle
to win all the time.
4) to boost their own self-esteem and
confidence giving them a
psychological edge over the
opponent/opponents.
Why do Performers Take Drugs?(3)

5) To mask the pain of certain sports injuries

hence allowing the athlete to perform at a
high level even when they are suffering
from sports injuries.
6) To control and reduce the weight of the
athletes performing. This technique is used
widely in boxing to bypass weight classes
Why do Performers Take Drugs?(4)

7) To hide the use of any other banned

substances.
Types of Doping

• With the advancement in science and

technology there are various ways of doping
and will only increase in the future.
• There are two main types of doping:
1)Performance Enhancing Drugs(PEDs)
2) Physical Methods of Doping
Performance Enhancing Drugs(First type
of Doping)

There are two

types of
performance
enhancing drugs:
1) Narcotics
2) Steroids
Narcotics

Narcotics are used as doping in sports.

They are injected into a human’s blood
stream, or muscles, or under skin.
Narcotics can also be swallowed.
Consumption of narcotics reduces,
eliminate, and hide pain. Examples of
narcotics are morphine and methadone
Narcotics(2)

They are also used for

moderate inflammation.
This drug is commonly
used in sports with less
recovery time in between
games. Athletes from
football and hockey
games commonly use
narcotics.
Steroids

The well-known doping drugs called anabolic-

androgenic steroids are a group of powerful
chemical compound, related to the male sex
hormone ‘testosterone’.
Steroids(2)

The original purpose of steroids was to

help with different diseases. It was
developed in the 1930’s. Consumption
helps to produce more hormones in the
body.
Physical Methods of Doping

• There are two types of

physical methods of
doping:
1)Gene Doping
2) Blood Doping
Gene Doping

• It is the non-therapeutic use

of cells. Or the modulation of
gene expression having the
capacity to improve athletic
performance. Increased
muscle growth blood
production endurance oxygen
disposal and pain resistance.
Gene Doping(2)

• In such cases nothing unusual would enter

the blood stream. The new gene may be
identical to the natural gene and may not
be in every cell of the body. Some viruses
are present in certain organs such as
kidney liver thus only samples taken from
these are as can lead to detection
Blood Doping

It is an illicit method of
improving athletic
performance by
artificially boosting the
blood ability to bring
more oxygen to
muscles.
Blood Doping(2)

• Blood doping increases the amount of

hemoglobin in the blood stream. Since
hemoglobin is an oxygen carrying
protein in the blood. So increasing
hemoglobin allows high amount of
oxygen to reach and fuel in an athlete’s
muscles
Side Effects of Doping

1. Taking doping drugs can have terrible

effects on your body. The well known
doping drug, steroids has a number of
negative effects on the body. Steroids
interrupt the normal development of
hormones throughout your body. When this
happens, human body experiences
changes that are irreversible.
Side Effects of Doping(2)

2. The blood doping causes much stress on

the heart. The reason for this is that the red
blood count increases which causes the
blood in blood stream to become thick. The
human heart is not used to pumping such
thick blood. This leads to different kinds of
heart diseases
Side effects of Doping(3)

3. Lean mass builders such as anabolic steroids can

cause dangerous increase in the levels of cholesterol,
heart attack, hypertension, stroke, liver and kidney
damage, jaundice, depression, aggression, mood
swings, acne and skin disease, reduced sperm count
and impotence in males, and amenorrhea in females.
Side Effects of Doping(4)

4. Those masking drugs used to prevent the

detection of other banned substances can
cause severe allergic reactions, nausea and vomiting
Conclusion

Unfortunately doping is very prevalent in

the world of sports today although
WADA and NADA have been trying to
reduce it’s prevalence. Doping benefits
athletes in their sport but it has many
horrible side effects. Doping should be
discouraged.
