What is Memory?
The term memory refers to the
component within your computer
that allows for short term data
access.
Memory is one of the basic
functions of a computer, because
without it, a computer would not
be able to function properly.
Types of memory
There are technically two types
of computer memory: Primary
and Secondary.
PRIMARY MEMORY
Primary memory is the computer’s
main memory.
It stores the data temporarily.
Data stored in the primary memory
can be directly accessed by the CPU.
The size of primary memory is
mainly available in small sizes
starting from 500MB to 32GB.
Example: RAM, ROM, Registers,
Cache memory.
RAM- Random Access Memory
RAM is used to store the data that
is currently processed by the CPU.
Most of the programs and data
that are modifiable are stored in
RAM.
Integrated RAM chips are available
in two forms:
DRAM-Dynamic RAM
SRAM-Static RAM
ROM- Read Only Memory
We can Only read.
It is permenant memory.
There are 4 types of ROM.
 PROM-Programmable ROM
EPROM-Electrically
programmable ROM
EEPROM-Electrically erasable
programmable ROM.
CACHE MEMORY
Cache memory is the memory
which is nearest to the cpu.
Recent intructions are stored in
the cpu.
Cache memory is attached for
storing the input which is given
by the user,which is neccesary
for the cpu to perform task.
Secondary memory
Secondary memory is external
memory.
It cannot immediately accessible
by a computer or proccessor.
It saves the data permanently.
Example: Hard Disk, Floppy
Disk, Magnetic tapes
