TIME MANAGEMENT AND

PUNCTUALITY
INTRODUCTION

 What is the word for when you are on time? You know!
Like when you have to do a project and you hand it in on
the due date? Punctuality? Yeah! There we go! Punctuality.

 Why is it so important?? You might have conveniently had

this conversation before! No? Well, either way, you are here
because you want to know why punctuality is so important,
and I am here because I want to tell you.
DEFINITION
 Punctuality is the quality or state of being punctual.

Strict observance in keeping engagements; promptness. This

quality is the most important to learn in the life as well as in
the workplace, and it is the single most important key to
success.

 It is the action of being on time. Punctuality revolves around

responsibility, commitment, and the seriousness with which
one takes.
CONT…

 Punctuality is a necessity for success, it is crucial in school,

in work, in general life itself. It is really important in school
because some teachers take off points for late work.
 When you are punctual it gives offs a good impression, it
shows you are a good student and will surely get you far in
life.

 An irresponsible student who is never on time most likely

won’t be taken seriously, won’t have as many privileges and
won’t get noticed like a punctual student.
CONT…

 Punctuality means arriving or doing things at the appointed

time, neither early nor late. It is the secret of success in life.
The renowned and successful men in the world are known to
be punctual. They knew the value of time and utilized it in the
proper way in their life.

 Punctuality is one of the key performance indicators in an

industry and an important service differentiator especially for
valuable high-yield customers. It is fundamental to business.
 In the workplace punctuality is everything. Your boss will
expect 110% of you, punctuality included. To be respected,
you need to be reliable, committed, hard-working. You need
to be, among other things, to be punctual.
 What is to be expected of you if you are always late? It will
seem like you do not care about your job, like you are asking
to get fired.
 When you have an assignment. Plan how much time you are
going to take. Be generous! If you think you will need 3 days,
give yourself 5 just in case .
CONT…

 When you have to wake up early, get everything ready the night
before and go to bed on time! When you are well rested you
won’t find yourself reaching for the snooze button.

 Plan ahead. Be ready for anything. Of your ride fails you. Have
a back up. Make two copies of your work, things like that.

 Get there as early as you can. If you are five minutes early, you
are on time. If you are on time , you are late.
TIME MANAGEMENT

 When a person does a work at the time appointed for it he is

said to punctual. The train, arriving at or leaving station at the
fixed hour and minute is said to have arrived or left punctually.
 Punctuality is great attention to the appointed time. It implies
great care not to be either too late or too early for any work.
 There is an English proverb, ‘Time and tide wait for no man’.
This is the only effective way of expressing the importance
of punctuality. Suppose we have to do a certain work on a
particular morning at 8 o’clock; and we get up too late.
CONT…

 The hour has passed away and that particular morning will not
come again. The opportunity of doing the work at that hour,
be considered as lost forever. So we have to be very careful.
 Punctuality has a great virtue. It is not difficult to practice. It is
possible for every person, intelligent and dull, to be punctual.
It requires a wakeful mind. It demands a thing at right time.
 A lazy person can not be punctual in discharging his duties.
The habit of procrastination or putting off is the enemy of
punctuality.
CONT…
 There are many examples of failure due to inability to keep an
appointment. Once an artist lost the chance of becoming a
great because, he could not be punctual. He was going to paint
the portrait of Queen Victoria. But he arrived half an hour late
and, the Queen had left the palace.

 In our society, the value of punctuality is not yet fully realized.

It is a common experience that streams of students go late to
schools almost every day. It is very rarely that public meetings
begin at the appointed time. It is unfortunately true that many
leaders arrive for public functions at least half an hour late.
CONT…
 Punctuality is a social virtue. A man who is punctual, saves his
own time. He does not cause any inconvenience or discomfort
to others. He, thereby, wins the confidence of those he deals
with them.

 Punctuality is the key to worldly success. In almost every

profession, Punctuality contributes to progress and prosperity.
It is a virtue which ought to be cultivated from the early years.
 It is the duty of parents to teach their children punctuality both
by example and precept. If all are punctual, the nation, as a
whole, is the gainer.
PUNCTUALITY- THE KEY TO SUCCESS

 Punctuality in the academic domain is etiquette, as it is a habit

of doing things on a timely manner, keeping in mind the
importance of time. Students ought to be punctual since it is
the key to success.
 It is considered to be the noblest of virtues. It is the mark of
civilized and cultured people. It is the habit of doing things in
correct time. ‘A stitch in time saves nine’, so says an English
proverb. Doing things in time saves from unnecessary troubles
 It is the habit of doing things exactly in time. A punctual man
will be a winner everywhere. He is always one step ahead of
others. If we are not stick on our work promptly, punctually,
how can we become successful!
CONT…
 Punctuality is the habit of doing things promptly at the proper
time. It must be considered a cardinal virtue because of its
beneficial fruits, and also because of the harmful effects a lack
of it can produce.
 Punctuality is a necessary habit that must be cultivated by
every person. Without it nothing could ever be brought to a
conclusion, everything would be in a state of chaos. It is the
mark of a civilized society.
 Punctuality means to do something at the agreed or proper
time; on time. It shows how much you are dedicated to the job,
interested in the work and capable of handling responsibility
that is given to you as an office holder or field worker etc.
VALUE OF PUNCTUALITY IN LIFE

 It is said that time and tide wait for none. Time is always
marching. Those who do not march with time are always
lagging behind it. Time is divided into years, months, days,
hours, minutes and seconds.
 A person who does not care for these fractions of time, loses
the race of life. He woefully remains behind while the others
go marching.
 The caravan of life goes on without rest. If we do not move
with it, it will leave us behind. Then we will only be lost in the
cloud of dust raised by this moving caravan.
CONT…
 Punctuality is a way of accepting the importance of time.
Many people do not value time. They are always late for
works, appointments, etc. They cannot work according to
deadlines.
 They go on postponing things on one pretext or the other. One
of the most common pretexts is that of mood. They often wait
for the right mood or inspiration to set them working.
 This disease of mood makes them lazy and they cannot
progress in life. Such people are generally failures in life.
Success in any enterprise is one percent inspiration and ninety-
nine per cent inspiration. They are not punctual in their work.
Their irregular working habits make them lazy.
AN UNDESIRABLE ATTITUDE

 Punctuality is a great virtue. This is particularly true in dealing

with others. One should never be late for appointments or
meetings.
 If you tell a person that you will meet him at 4.00 pm and
keep him waiting till six in the evening, you are not only
wasting his time, but also giving a very poor impression of
yours to him.
 By not caring for the time of a person, we are actually
showing that we do not care for him. In our society, this
phenomenon is particularly severe.
CONT…

 It is often jokingly said that being one or two hours late is the
Standard National Time. We see example of this disease
everywhere.
 At functions, the chief guests, particularly ministers, come
very late. They think it a privilege to keep people waiting for
them. Trains and buses very rarely depart or reach on time.
 At parties, people reach late so that they would be cheered by
others people. Otherwise, they would have to clap for those
who come after them.
IMPACT OF PUNCTUALITY

 If we look at the lives of the successful people, we will see

that they valued time greatly. They never wasted time. If we
keep wasting time, time will waste us.
 A great benefit of punctuality is that it casts a good impression
on others. It shows your sincerity and honesty. You should also
always make a point to reach a few minutes earlier than the
fixed time.
 While travelling to work or other engagements, you should
make an allowance for traffic jams and other exigencies. That
is to say that you should plan your affairs in such a way that
you are not even on time, but always in time.
CONT…

 Many candidates have lost jobs because they reached for the
interviews late. Sometimes they missed the trains for going to
the place of interview.
 Not being punctual results in the loss of many opportunities in
life. We should cultivate the habit of regulating our life
according to the clock.
 Those who are forgetful, should make notes in diaries, slips,
etc. to remind them what to do at what time. Only those people
who are punctual will rise and progress in life.
SOME VERY USEFUL TIPS

 Being on time is so important for academic success! Learn to

improve your reputation and your chances for academic
success with these tips for being right on time--all the time!

 Rethink the meaning of "on time." People who are always

on time are really people who arrive early every day--and
acknowledge that things can go wrong to set them back
several minutes. When things do "go wrong" these students
arrive on time!
CONT…
 Understand the importance of being on time. Students who
are always on time are the people who earn the best grades,
win scholarships, and get into great colleges. In the working
world, the people who are always on time are the people who
get promotions.

 Get enough sleep. If you have some trouble getting out of bed
in the morning, then make a serious effort to get to bed earlier.
Sufficient sleep is essential for maximum brain function, you
really don't want to ignore this aspect of your scholastic habits.
CONT…
 Give yourself a realistic amount of time to dress & groom.
You can do this with a simple exercise: Get up early in the
morning and time yourself to see how long it takes you to get
ready. You may be surprised at the time it takes, especially if
you find you have been trying to squeeze forty minutes worth
of grooming into fifteen minutes each morning.
 Know exactly when you need to be at your destination and
subtract ten or fifteen minutes to establish your arrival
time. This will give you time to go to the restroom or chat
with friends. What time are you expected to be seated in your
home room or your first class? If class begins at 8:00, you
should arrive at the school by 7:45 and be in your seat at 7:55.
CONT…

 Be open to your teacher's preferences. Does your teacher

want you to be seated early? If your teacher wants you to be in
class before the bell rings, then do so if it's possible-even if
you don't agree.
 Don't get angry and blame others if you aren't meeting the
teacher's expectations. Why cause trouble for yourself?
 Communicate any problems. If your bus is always late or
you have to take your little brother to school and it always
makes you late, just explain this to your teacher.
CONT…

 Listen to traffic news. If you depend on public transportation

to get to school, always keep an eye on schedule interruptions.

 Have a backup plan for your transportation. If you

normally ride to school with a friend, think ahead and plan
what to do if your friend gets sick.

 Set your clocks forward by ten minutes. This is a dirty little

psychological trick that many people play on themselves. The
funny thing is, it really works!
4 HABITS OF PUNCTUAL PEOPLE

 A study done at San Francisco State University found that

about 20% of the U.S. population is chronically late--but it
is not because they don't value others' time. It is more
complicated than that.
 Repetitive lateness is more often related to the personality
characteristics such as anxiety or a penchant for thrill-seeking.
Some people are drawn to the adrenaline rush of that last-
minute sprint to the finish line, while others receive an ego
boost from over-scheduling and filling each moment with
activity.
 Our relationship with time often starts in childhood and
becomes an ingrained habit.
CONT…
 Looking back, you were probably late or early all of your life
—it is part physiological and part psychological. Most
chronically late people truly dislike being late, but it is a
surprisingly difficult habit to overcome. Telling a late person
to be on time is a little like telling a dieter to simply stop
eating so much.

 The majority of people have a combination of late and

punctual habits--usually on time, but with a frantic rush at the
last minute--but we can all learn from those who are
chronically punctual. Four traits that always on time share:
CONT…
 THEYARE REALISTIC THINKERS
 Punctual people know how long things take. Chronically late
people, however, engage magical thinking. If once, 10 years
ago, they made it to work in 20 minutes, they believe that is
how long it should take. They forget about the 99% of the
times that took 30 minutes.
 To develop realistic habits, relearning to tell time has been
suggested. Write down how long you think it takes to shower,
get ready in the morning and drive to work. Then for a week,
track how long those things really take. Chronically late
people are often off of their time estimates by 25% to 30%.
CONT…
 THEY GIVE THEMSELVES BUFFER TIME.
 Punctual people are usually early and being late makes them
stressed out and they don’t like feeling rushed. Late people get
stressed out from being late, too, but they do not strive to be
early; they tend to time things to the minute.
 For a 9 a.m. meeting, for example, a punctual person would
try to arrive by 8:45 am or 8:50 am, allowing enough time for
an unexpected delay, such as traffic or a full parking garage.
 A punctual person reviews directions online, checks traffic
reports before leaving, and some will even drive to a new
location the day before to understand the route. To be
punctual, plan to arrive early.
CONT…
 THEY ARE ORGANIZED

 Almost 45% of everything we do on a daily basis is automatic.

Our lives are filled with habits--from the way you brush teeth
to how you get dressed and leave for work.
 If we did not do things automatically, it would take us forever
to get through our day.
 The habits of people who are always on time are highly
structured. They analyze their daily activities, set routines, and
stick to them on regular basis.
CONT…

 Chronically late people, however, don’t have structure and

often fall on the attention deficit disorder spectrum.

 Instead of thinking about why their routines don’t work and

trying something different next time, chronically late people
simply hope that tomorrow will be better. To become punctual
put more routines and structure into your life. For example, do
everything you can to prepare for the morning the night
before.
CONT…
 THEYARE COMFORTABLE WITH DOWNTIME
 Being punctual often means getting to meeting or an
appointment early. Punctual people use the extra five or 10
minutes as a chance to catch up on emails, read over notes, or
simply enjoy the solitude.

 Chronically late people, however, hate downtime. They enjoy

the thrill of that last-minute sprint to the finish line and crave
stimulation. To be more comfortable with downtime, bring
along something to fill those spare moments. Knowing that
you have something to occupy your time will help.
CONCLUSION

 Punctuality enables us to finish our work in the appointed

time. Thus we are not in a haste to do our work. So we avoid
waste.

 Punctuality helps us to do our work thoroughly and well. It is

a virtue which is sure to bring success to everyone who
practices it.
