MONOTONE

SEQUENCE AND
SUBSEQUENT
PRESENTED BY:
BRENDA B. MORCOSO
SEQUENCE
Definition
A list of things (generally numbers) that are
arranged in a specific order.
Example
3, 5, 7, 9, 11, …
Is a kind of sequence that can extend to finite
number or infinitely.
MONOTONE SEQUENCE
Definition
Is a special kind of sequence in which the successive terms of sequence are
either decreasing or increasing.
Example
1,2,3,4,… is a monotonically increasing sequence. Or,
9,8,7,6,5,4,… is a monotonically decreasing sequence

Monotonic sequence are categorized into two groups:

Increasing monotonic sequence
Decreasing monotonic sequence
INCREASING MONOTONIC SEQUENCE
Definition
 Successive term is greater than or equal to the preceding term.

Example
5 ,5, 6, 6, 7,… (weakly monotonic increasing)
 5, 6, 7 ,8 ,9,… (strictly monotonic increasing)
DECREASING MONOTONIC SEQUENCE
Definition
 Successive term is less than or equal to the preceding term.

Example
7, 7, 6, 6, 5, 5, 4,… (weakly monotonic decreasing)
 7, 6, 5, 4,… (strictly monotonic decreasing)
MONOTONIC SEQUENCE THEOREM

“A monotone sequence is convergent only if

the sequence is bounded”
MONOTONIC SEQUENCE THEOREM
A sequence is referred to as a “converging sequence”
or “convergent” if the value of the terms tends to some
fixed number, n, as the number of terms keeps on
increasing or decreasing.
A sequence is referred to as a “bounded” if
there are two numbers (the upper limit and
lower limit) such that all the terms of the
sequence lie between these two numbers.

MONOTONE SUBSEQUENCE THEOREM

“Every sequence of real numbers has a

monotonic subsequence
MONOTONE SUBSEQUENT THEOREM

Proof: Let be a sequence of real numbers,

and call the m term of the sequence a
th

peak if all n≥m we have that
