Computer

System
COMPUTER SYSTEM
-combination of components
working together to perform a
specific task
Main Hardware
Components of
Computer System
HARDWARE

-is the physical, touchable,

electronic, and mechanical
components of a
computer system.
System Unit

-also known as computer

chassis. It houses the
internal parts of a
microcomputer which
includes motherboard,
microprocessor, memory
chips, buses, ports,
expansion slots and cards.
Motherboard /
Mainboard / System
Board

-the computer's main

printed circuit board
(PCB) that allows other
computer parts to be
connected to one
another.
CPU (Central
Processing Unit)
-it is known as the
“brain” of a
computer. It
retrieves and
executes all
calculation and
instructions on a
Primary storage
– are the internal
component of a
computer that is
located on the
motherboard.
RAM is a type of ROM is a type of
volatile memory. non- volatile
Data in RAM is not memory. Data in
permanently ROM is
written. When you permanently
power off your written and is not
computer the erased when you
data stored in power off your
RAM is deleted. computer.
Expansion Bus-
allows computer
expansion by
attaching
adapters/expansio
n card to provide
additional features
to a computer.
Adapters/
Expansion Cards –
is an electronic
card/board and
known as an add-on
card, expansion
board, internal card,
interface adapter, or
card.
Power Supply Unit
(PSU)- Is an internal
hardware component
installed in the back
corner of the PC case. It
converts 120v AC
(standard house power)
into DC voltages that
are used by other
components in the PC
Hard Disk Drive (HDD)-
Also known as hard disk
or hard drive. It is an
electro-mechanical
storage device and
known as the main
storage device of a
computer that stores the
operating system and
other software.
Solid State Drive
(SSD) – is a storage
device that can be used
internal or external part,
SSDs uses either IDE or
SATA interface same as
HDD but the main
difference between
HDDs and SSDs is that
SDDs do not have
mechanical moving
Optical Disc Drive
(ODD)- uses a laser
light to read data
from or write data to
an optical disc.
Three types of optical
disc: Compact Disk
(CD); Digital
Versatile Disc (DVD);
and
INPUT DEVICES - ACCEPTS DATA AND INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE USER OR FROM
ANOTHER COMPUTER SYSTEM

Keyboard Entry- Data is inputted to the

computer through a keyboard.
Direct Entry - A form of input that does not
require data to be keyed by someone sitting at a
keyboard. Direct-entry devices create machine-
readable data on paper, or magnetic media, or
feed it directly into the computer’s CPU.
THREE CATEGORIES OF DIRECT ENTRY DEVICES

Pointing Devices- An
input device that can
control the movement
of the pointer (cursor)
to select items on a
display screen.
Examples are mouse,
touch screen, light
pen, and digitizer
tablet.
THREE CATEGORIES OF DIRECT ENTRY DEVICES

Scanning Devices- A
device that can capture or
read a printed copy of
documents or illustrations
and convert it into a digital
format for the computer to
manipulate. Examples are
image scanner and
barcode reader
THREE CATEGORIES OF DIRECT ENTRY DEVICES

Voice- Input Devices- also

known as speech or voice
recognition systems that allow
a user to send speech or audio
signals to a computer for
processing, recording, or
carrying out commands.
One of the examples is a
computer microphone which
allow users to record a voice
message and navigate software
through voice command
settings.
OUTPUT DEVICES- ANY COMPUTER HARDWARE
COMPONENT THAT SHOWS RESULTS AFTER THE COMPUTER
PROCESSES THE INPUT DATA ENTERED.

Monitor- It displays
information in visual form,
using text and graphics on
its screen or video display
terminal.
OUTPUT DEVICES
Projectors- is an
optical device
that projects an
image (or moving
images) onto a
surface or a
projection screen.
Output devices
Smart Board- also
known as interactive
whiteboard. It is a
display screen that has
a touch sensitive
transparent panel
covering the screen,
which is similar to a
touch screen.
OUTPUT DEVICES
Printer- A device that allows
text or illustration on a
computer to be printed on
paper.
The five types of printers
are:
1. Inkjet or Bubble-Jet printer,
2. Laser printer,
3. LCD and LED printer,
4. Line printer, and
5. Thermal printer.
OUTPUT DEVICES
Speaker- a device
that provides
sounds as an output
data of a computer.
It allows user to
listen to music or
hear the sound
from a computer.
Ports- External Cables and Wires- A
connecting cable is usually two or
more wires running
sockets on the side by side and
outside of the bonded, twisted or
computer braided together to
form a single
assembly, but may
also refer to a solid,
heavy cord
SOFTWARE IS THE SET OF INSTRUCTIONS (ALSO CALLED A
PROGRAM) THAT GUIDES THE HARDWARE TO OPERATE EFFECTIVELY.

System Software- Any software

required to support the production
or execution of application
programs, but which is not specific
to any application.
Common operating systems
include: Windows, the
Macintosh OS, OS/2 and UNIX.
Application Software-
Designed to help the user
to perform singular or
multiple related tasks. The
following are some
examples of application
software: word processing
software, spreadsheet
software, database
management software,
graphic software, etc.
Peopleware or Liveware is simply the user
of a computer. Before a computer works, it
requires the computer user to push of a
switch button, a press on a key or a click on
a button. This makes the computer user an
important part of a computer system.
Students, Parent, Teachers, Accountant,
Engineer, Doctor and other professional who
uses computer are considered as
Peopleware.
