Introduction
A preposition is a word that shows the
relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and
other words in a sentence. Examples: in, on, at,
by, with, about

Prepositions at its basic form They are generally formed by

#1: A preposition must be followed by an object and if any verb comes after a preposition it must be in gerund
form.

 Sohini prevented her from committing mistakes.


 She insisted on going to the party.
 They succeeded in solving the problem.
 He is afraid of flying.
 She thanked him for helping her.

# 2: When an interrogative pronoun comes as an object, the preposition mostly comes at the end or front position.

 What is she thinking of?


 Whom are you talking to?
 What are you looking for?
 Which movie are you interested in?
 Who is she speaking with?
#3: When a sentence is formed like an infinitive (to+verb), in such case preposition is always placed after the infinitive.

 Royal Inn is a good place to stay at.


 There is nothing to worry about.
 I have a lot to think about.
 She has something to complain about.
 This is a good book to write in.

#4: And when an object is a relative pronoun ‘that’ in that case, the preposition comes at the end.

 This is the movie that I was excited about.


 She is the person that I was talking to.
 These are the keys that I was looking for.
 That's the problem that I have been working on.
 This is an activity that I’m fond of.

#5: In the formation of interrogative sentences, prepositions may come at the beginning of the sentence.

 With whom did you go to the party?


 To where are you planning to travel next?
 Under what circumstances did they decide to cancel the event?
 At what time does the movie start?
 By what means can we improve our efficiency?

 The Second World War occurred in the 20th century.
 We eat breakfast in the morning.
 The meeting is scheduled for 3 o'clock.
 We usually have lunch at noon.  The cat is under the table.
 He wakes up at 6 AM every morning.  Put the sandwich over there.
 The train leaves at 9:30 PM.  The key is locked inside the car.
 They will arrive by Friday.  They stepped outside the house.
 She will be back after dinner.  Major is ranked above corporal.
 The event starts at 7:00 PM.  He is waving at you from below the stairs.
 We are going on vacation during the summer.
 The package should arrive before Christmas.
 They celebrate their anniversary on January 1st.
 The concert will be staged throughout the month of May.
 I learned how to ski during the holidays.
 He usually arrives around 3pm.
 It was about six in the morning when we made it to bed.
 The store is open until midnight.
 The cat is under the table.
 She stood in front of the building.
 The keys are on the desk.  She walked along the beach.
 They live near the park.  The bird flew over the trees.
 He hid behind the tree.  He climbed up the ladder.
 The book is between the two shelves.  They ran across the field.

 The children skipped past the playground.
 She ran away from the crowd.
 The river flows into the lake.
 She spoke to him in a polite manner.
 They sailed across the ocean.
 He solved the problem with great skill.
 The hiker climbed up the mountain.
 They succeeded through hard work.
 The car drove along the highway.
 She apologized for her mistake.

 He reacted in surprise.

1. Incorrect Preposition Choice:
• Incorrect: She is good in math.
• Correct: She is good at math.

• Incorrect: Where are you at? •Incorrect: Where is it at?

3. Missing Prepositions: 7. Misuse of "Between" and "Among":


• Incorrect: I look forward meeting you. •Incorrect: The secret is between us three.
