IMPACT TESTING

WHAT IS AN IMPACT TESTING?

• Impact testing is a type of mechanical testing used to assess the toughness

or resistance of a material to sudden forces or impacts. It typically involves
striking a specimen with a hammer or pendulum at high speed and
measuring how much energy the material absorbs before breaking or
deforming. This helps determine the material’s ability to withstand shock
loading or impacts without fracturing.
THE MOST COMMON IMPACT TESTS INCLUDE:

Charpy Impact Test: A notched specimen is placed horizontally and struck by a swinging
hammer. The energy absorbed by the material is measured as the difference in height before
and after the impact.

Izod Impact Test: Similar to the Charpy test but with the specimen held vertically, and the
hammer strikes it at a fixed point.

• Impact testing is critical for evaluating materials in industries where they might be exposed to
sudden stresses, such as in construction, automotive, and aerospace applications.
CHARPY IMPACT
TESTING

Charpy impact testing, also

known as the Charpy V-
notch test, measures a
material’s ability to absorb
energy during fracture. The
test involves striking a
notched sample with a
pendulum hammer and
recording the energy
absorbed.
IZOD IMPACT TESTING

Izod impact testing is used to

measure a material’s resistance
to impact under controlled
conditions. Unlike the Charpy
test, the Izod test involves striking
a vertically clamped, notched
specimen. The absorbed energy
is recorded to determine the
material’s toughness.
