Quarter 2 – Lesson 3

es
At the end of the lesson the students are expected to:
1) graph a quadratic function:
(a) domain;
(b) range;
(c) intercepts; and
(d) direction of the opening of the parabola.
Concavity of
the Parabola
Concavity of the
Parabola
The concavity of the parabola refers to the direction of its
opening which may either be opening upward or downward.
When a parabola opens upward, the vertex becomes a minimum
point and a maximum if otherwise. Without graphing, the
concavity is determined by the sign of a of the quadratic function
in the form y = a + bx + c.
If a > 0 the parabola opens upward and the vertex at (h, k) is a minimum
point.
If a < 0 the parabola opens downward and the vertex at (h, k) is a maximum
point.

The Domain and Range of a Quadratic
Function
Oftentimes, the domain and range of a quadratic function need to be
determined in order to visualize the extent of the parabola. The domain
of a quadratic function y = a + bx + c refers to the set of all x-values-or
the independent variable-that the graph may assume. On the other
hand, the range is the set of all y-values that the graph of the quadratic
function extends up to.
The domain of all quadratic functions is the set of all real numbers,
written as {x|x is any real number} or {x|x ∈ ℝ}. On the other hand,
the range depends on the opening of the parabola and the value of k.
The Intercepts
of the
Parabola
The Intercepts of the Parabola
The graph of a quadratic function has other properties, namely,
the y-intercept and the x-intercept(s). The latter is also known as
the zeros of the function. The intercepts are points on the
coordinate axes that the parabola passes through. The
coordinates of the x-intercepts are (p, 0) and (q, 0) where p and q
are the values on the x-axis while the y-intercept has the
coordinates (0, c) where c is a value on the y-axis. The y-
intercept is calculated by letting x be equal to zero in the
quadratic function and solving for y. On the other hand, the x-
intercepts are determined by setting y = 0 and solving for the
roots of the resulting quadratic equation.
