Microsoft Word
Microsoft Word is a widely used word processing software with various
features and components that allow users to create, edit, format, and
manage documents.
The program can work on multiple platforms, like Windows, macOS,
smartphones, and tablets.
What can you do with Microsoft
Word Docs?
• Use the traditional options like copy, cut and paste.
• Add headers and footers, and page formatting.
• Use Mail merge for letters, envelopes and labels.
• Access add-ons like dictionaries, mail chimp, and Fax.
• Open and edit PDF files.
• Insert pictures from your hard drive or from the web right from the
Microsoft Word Insert Tool Bar.

1. Title Bar
Displays the name of the current document and the application
name.
2. Ribbon
The main toolbar that contains tabs such as Home, Insert, Design, Layout,
References, Mailings, Review, and View.
• Home: Contains common formatting tools like font, paragraph, styles, and editing
options.
• Insert: Allows you to insert items such as tables, pictures, shapes, charts, links,
headers and footers, text boxes, and symbols.
• Design: Provides document formatting options like themes, colors, and font styles.
• Layout: Contains page setup options such as margins, orientation, size, columns,
breaks, and indentation.
• References: Includes tools for managing citations, bibliographies, footnotes, endnotes,
and table of contents.
• Mailings: Used for creating envelopes, labels, and mail merges.
• Review: Provides tools for spelling and grammar check, word count, comments,
tracking changes, and comparing documents.
• View: Offers different document views, zoom options, and window arrangement.
3. Quick Access Toolbar
• Located above the Ribbon, it provides quick access to
frequently used commands such as Save, Undo, Redo, and
Print.
4. Document Area
• The main workspace where you type and format text.
5. Status Bar
• Located at the bottom of the
window, it displays information
about the document, such as
the current page number, word
count, language, and view
mode. It also provides
shortcuts to change the view
mode and zoom level.
6. Scroll Bars
Vertical and horizontal bars that
allow you to scroll through the
document.
7. Ruler
Located at the top and left of the document area, it helps in aligning
text, tables, and other elements within the document.
8. Navigation Pane
A pane that can be used to
navigate through the
document headings, pages,
or search results.
9. Backstage
View
Accessed via the File tab, it
provides options for managing
the document, such as saving,
opening, printing, and sharing.
10. Mini Toolbar
A floating toolbar that
appears when you select
text, offering quick access to
common formatting tools.
11. Contextual Tabs
• Additional tabs that appear on the Ribbon when certain
objects (like tables, images, or charts) are selected,
providing tools specific to those objects.

Panes
• Dockable panes that
provide additional
functionality, such as
the Styles pane, the
Navigation pane, and
the Clipboard pane.
