.
ILLUSTRATION
Geometrically,
parabola is a curve
that is formed when
a tilted plane cuts a
right circular cone.
(See Figure 1)
MEANING OF PARABOLA
A parabola is the set of all
points P(x,y) on the plane at
equal distance from a fixed
point called the focus F, and a
fixed line called the directrix D.
From the definition, PQ = PF
DEFINITION OF TERMS
1. The vertex of a parabola is the point of intersection of the parabola and
the axis of symmetry. This can either be the lowest (minimum) or highest
(maximum) point of the parabola. You can determine whether you have a
minimum or maximum by either looking at its graph or by the equation itself.
2. The parabola focus is a point from which distances are measured in
forming a conic and where these distances converge.
3. A parabola directrix is a line from which distances are measured in
forming a conic.
4. The line perpendicular to the directrix and passing through the focus is
called the axis of symmetry.Latus rectum is a line passing through the foci
of the conic and is parallel to the directrix of the conic.
5. The latus rectum is the focal chord and the number of latus rectums is
equal to the number of foci in the conic.
PROPERTIES OF PARABOLA
1. The vertex V(h, k) is the
midpoint of the line segment
between the focus, F and the
directrix, D.

Some real-life examples of a parabola:
The Ay writing tstart the lesson by writing the word “TANGENT LINE” on the bond asking the class what they know about a
parabola.
2. The shape of Banana is taking the shape of
a parabola.
3. The Rainbow is taking the shape of a
parabola.
EVALUATION
Directions: Read the given questions carefully and answer each item correctly.
LET’S PRACTICE! Check your parabola!
.
1. If the focus of the parabola is to the right of the directrix, what are the coordinates of the focus?
The Ay writing tstart the lesson by writing the word “TANGENT LINE” on the bond asking the class what they know about a
tangent line or where they first heard the word “ “TANGENT LINE” on the board and asking the class what they know about a
tangent line or where they first heard the word “tangent”.
