OPENING PRAYER

Dear Lord and Father of all, Thank you for today.

Thank you for ways in which you provide for us all.
For Your protection and love we thank you. Help us
to focus our hearts and minds now on what we are
about to learn. Inspire us by Your Holy Spirit as we
listen and write. Guide us by your eternal light as we
discover more about the world around us. We ask all
this, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

.
ILLUSTRATION
Geometrically,
parabola is a curve
that is formed when
a tilted plane cuts a
right circular cone.
(See Figure 1)
MEANING OF PARABOLA
A parabola is the set of all
points P(x,y) on the plane at
equal distance from a fixed
point called the focus F, and a
fixed line called the directrix D.
From the definition, PQ = PF
DEFINITION OF TERMS
1. The vertex of a parabola is the point of intersection of the parabola and
the axis of symmetry. This can either be the lowest (minimum) or highest
(maximum) point of the parabola. You can determine whether you have a
minimum or maximum by either looking at its graph or by the equation itself.
2. The parabola focus is a point from which distances are measured in
forming a conic and where these distances converge.
3. A parabola directrix is a line from which distances are measured in
forming a conic.
4. The line perpendicular to the directrix and passing through the focus is
called the axis of symmetry.Latus rectum is a line passing through the foci
of the conic and is parallel to the directrix of the conic.
5. The latus rectum is the focal chord and the number of latus rectums is
equal to the number of foci in the conic.
PROPERTIES OF PARABOLA
1. The vertex V(h, k) is the
midpoint of the line segment
between the focus, F and the
directrix, D.

2. |𝒂| is the focal distance from

the vertex to the focus.
PROPERTIES OF PARABOLA
3. 4|𝒂| is the length of the latus rectum. The
latus rectum is the segment whose
endpoints are on the parabola, passing
through the focus, perpendicular to the axis
of symmetry.
4. The focus, F, is neither a point on the
parabola nor on the directrix. It is a point on
the axis of symmetry.
