Rizal founded a civic organization , the La


Liga Filipina.
Purpose: to build a new group sought to

movement.

The Liga membership split into two groups:


conservatives - Cuerpo de Compromisarios which
pledged to continue supporting the La
Solidaridad.
radicals led by Bonifacio devoted themselves to

1896)

main reason of arrest:
incriminatory handbills, Pobres
Frailes, were allegedly found

Rizal was arrested and
imprisoned at Fort Santiago.

Gov.Gen. decreed that Rizal be deported (6-
8) south of the Philippines due to the

Rizal published books and articles abroad which
showed disloyalty to Spain and Church.

Rizal as a Scientist
There are three animals named
after Rizal. These species of
animals were the ones he collected
while he was an exile in Dapitan and
include Apogonia Rizali (Heller), a
type of small beetle; Draco
Rizali (Wandolleck), a species of
flying dragon; and Rachophorous
Rizali (Boetger), a species of toad.

Religion
Father Superior Pastel tried direly to
bring back Rizal’s into the belief of the
Catholic Church
However, Rizal says “ I want to hit the
friars but only those who use religion
as a tool for their own selfishness”
For him, the truth may lie in different
paths. Thus, religions may vary but
they all lead to the light.
As a Physician
Rizal’s fame actually attracted many
patients from many parts of the
country and even abroad.
He helped both the rich and the poor.
Rich patients such as Don Ignacio
Tumarong gave him 3000
For the poor patients he gives free
medicine and mostly are medicinal
plants.
Water System in Dapitan
Rizal was an Expert Surveyor (Perito
Agrimensor)
He used his knowledge to build a
safe and efficient water system in
Dapitan
An American Engineer Mr. Cameron
was fascinated on how Rizal made an
efficient water system given that he
no funds and very limited resources.
wrote literary pieces – (11-

Tree”, “My Retreat”,
“Josephine’ and “The Song
of the Traveler”.
Josephine Bracken (Irish)
arrived in Dapitan on
Feb.1895 with American
engineer Mr. Taufer

Francisco, who died 3 hours

Dr. Pio Valenzuela was sent by
Andres Bonifacio to ask for Rizal’s
view about the revolution.
For Rizal, a revolution is premature:
lack of arms and funds
people are not ready.
End of the EXILE
September 17, 1895 – Rizal wrote to
Gov.Gen. Ramon Blanco offering his
services as a doctor in Cuba for the
Spanish troops.

July 1, 1896- the governor-general


granted Rizal’s request.

July 31, 1896 – Rizal left Dapitan and


was on his way to Cuba.
