What Is a Map?

Map - a drawing which shows part of the earth’s surface from directly above.

Cartography – the study and making of

maps.

Cartographer – a person who draws or

produces maps.

What are maps?

•A map is a drawing of a place, as from
above. How accurate it is depends on:
•How much the map maker knows about
the place.
•How carefully it has been measured.
•Over the centuries, we humans have
learned more and more about places,
thanks to explorers, and traders, and
travelers of all kinds- and now thanks to
satellites. Instruments for measuring
have also get better and better.

Two maps of the

world
The world around 194 BCE, as
mapped by the Greek scholar
Eratosthenes. By then Greek
astronomers had proved that Earth
was not flat, but a sphere.
Eratosthenes drew his map with the
help of earlier maps, and travel
books. (He was not an explorer)

cartography went on in many

Measuring
For thousands of years, people relied on the
sun, moon, stars, and planets to work out
where they were. For example, by measuring
the sun’s height in the sky at noon you can
work out how far north or south you are.

Explorers made their own maps. So they

needed to know about astronomy, and how to
take measurements and do calculations, and
how to look up the tables of data that
astronomers provided.

For measuring, they used instruments like the

The Compass
The compass was invented in China. From
around 1200 CE, it was widely used for finding
directions. The photo on the right shows a
compass that Captain Cook may have used.

The traditional compass has a needle that

swings to line itself up with Earth’s magnetic
field. So it points north / south.

Compasses are still used today. Ships and planes

carry them as back-up. The design and
materials may have changed, but the purpose is

• satellites.
Today, map making has changed hugely,
thanks to satellites. And maps have
become more and more accurate.

• Hundreds of satellites are orbiting Earth

right now, capturing images. These
images help us to make maps of even the
most remote places.

• Other satellites help us to work out where

on Earth we are, without stars or
compasses. The GPS or Global

satellites.
• GPS has over 30 satellites orbiting
Earth. They send out radio waves.
Down on Earth, a GPS receiver
detects the radio waves and used
them to calculate its exact position
on Earth. Perfect for drawing maps!

• Mobile phones use GPS. So does that

sat nav ( satellite navigation )
system in cars. It’s hard to get lost!

UAE Linking: Mapping the

Emirates
• The UAE has a rich history of traditional
navigation (e.g., star navigation)
• Modern UAE uses advanced mapping
technology for urban planning
• Satellite imagery helps monitor coastal
changes and desert landscapes
• The UAE's space program contributes to global
mapping efforts
