What do you think is

the importance of
arts?
Give at least 2
elements or
principle of art
In this lesson, you should be able
to:
• Identify the art processes, elements, and
principles in arts that use new
technologies;
• Identify the use of digital art and its
principles applied by elements of design.
• Creates concepts through art processes,
elements, and principles using new
technologies (hardware and software) to

Art
• Plays a vital role in our lives thus, the objects
that we encounter on a daily basis weather we
deny it or not, embodies some elements and
principle which makes it visually appealing.
• Elements of Arts are stylistic features that an
artist are incorporating in an art piece to
communicate to his/her target audiences
• Principle of design on the other hand, are the
rules in composition that one must follow to
create an effective and attractive design
Different elements of art like Lines,
Shapes, Colors, and Textures are
used and combined to create
wonderful images and paintings
using new technologies.

Principles of arts like Harmony,

Balance, Rhythm, and Patterns are
also appreciated in digital or
Arts elements and principles
are applied even to digital and
commercial art created using
new technologies such as
computer, laptops, tablets,
and stylus, etc.
Elements of
Arts
Line
• Is one of the seven elements of art. It
is considered by many to be the most
basic elements of art. In terms of art,
line is considered “moving dot”.
• There are many types of lines: Thick,
Thin, Horizontal, vertical, Zigzag,
Diagonal, Curly, Curved, Spiral,
etc. and are often very expressive
Shape
•is the closed line. Shapes can be
geometric, like squares and
circles, or organic, like free
formed shapes or natural shape.
Shapes are flat and can express
length and width.
Forms
• are three-dimensional shapes,
expressing length, width, and
depth. Balls, cylinders, boxes
and triangles
Space
• is the area between and around
objects. The space around objects is
often called negative space;
negative space has shape. Space
can also refer to the feeling of
depth. Real space is three-
dimensional, in visual art when we
can create the feeling or illusion of
Colors
• is light reflected off objects. Color has
three main characteristics:
• HUE or its name (red, green, blue,
etc.)
• VALUE (how light or dark it is)
• INTENSITY (how bright or dull it is).
• Colors are categorized into three;
Textures
• Refers to the surface quality in a work
of art.
• is the surface quality that can be seen
and felt. Texture can be rough or
smooth, soft or hard. Texture do not
always feel the way they work; for
example, a drawing of a porcupine
may look prickly, but you touch the

Harmony
•Can be described as sameness,
the belonging of thing with
another.
•The repetition of design elements
like color, texture, shape, and
form is one of the easiest ways to
achieve harmony to create a
Balance
•Is the distribution of the visual
weight of objects, colors,
texture, and space.
•If the design was a scale,
these elements should be
balanced to make a design feel
In symmetrical balance, the elements
used on one side of design are similar to
those on the other side.
In asymmetrical balance, the other
sides are different but still look balanced.
In radial balance, the elements are
arranged around a central point and may
be similar.
Rhythm
•Is art and design refers to a
relationship between elements that
creates a sense of harmony.
•Rhythm can be seen in patterns, in
relationships between colors and
shapes, and in repetitions of lines
and forms.
Rhythm
• is created when one or more elements of
design are used repeatedly to create a
feeling of organized movement. Variety is
essential to keep rhythm exciting an
active, and moving the viewer around the
artwork. Rhythm creates a mood like
music or dancing.
Pattern
• As a principle of design may be defined as
regular arrangement of repeated same
elements i.e., line, shape, colors
repeatedly.
• Pattern usually increases the visual
excitement by supplementing surface
interest.
• is the repetition of an object or symbol all
Emphasis
• is part of the design that catches
the viewer’s attention. Usually
the artist will make one area
stand out by contrasting it with
other areas. The area will be
different in size, color, texture,
shape, etc.
Repetition
• works with pattern to make
the artwork seem active. The
repetition of elements of
design creates unity within
artwork.
Proportion
• is the feeling of unity created
when all parts (sizes, amounts, or
number) relate well with each
other. When drawing the human
figure, proportion can refer to the
size of the head compared to the
rest of the body.
Variety
• is the use of several elements
of design to hold the viewer’s
attention and to guide the
viewer’s eye through the
artwork.
Unity
• is the feeling of harmony
between all parts of the
artwork creating a sense of
completeness.
Quiz 1: Write True if the statement is
correct and False if not

from the rest.

together.
