PERFORMANCE TASK IN

EARTH AND LIFE

SCIENCE
Presented by: Group 1

Day 1
On the first day, we decided to use
bananas as our experiment subject.
On the three jars, we put 1/2 of a
small banana in each; with Jar A, it
was said to be left without a cover,
Jar B is said to be covered with
gauze, and then Jar C was tightly
covered with its cap. Both A and B
were left on open space, and then C
was put on a cool and dry place like
under the bed.

Day 2
On the 2nd day there was some
bit of change; on set A there was
a change of smell and texture; the
smell was like a banana with
liquor or alcohol, and the texture
became more mucky or glutinous,
and the color was more darker,
but on sets B and C there wasn't
seen much of a change; only on
set B was its color; it had a little
bit of darkness on the banana
peel and a little bit of dryness

Day 3
On the 3rd day of the experiment, there
was a moderate change on Jar A. The
first thing that we noticed was the foul
odor; the texture was very muddy, and
its color was far from its original color
and texture. On Jar B, the texture on the
outside layer of the banana became
dry, and the growing of mold or fungi
was finally starting to emerge on the
3rd day. Lastly, on Jar C, some parts
were starting to grow mold; fungi was
seen on small parts of the banana, and
we noticed that the lid was starting to

Day 4
On the fourth day, big changes
occurred on the jars. On set A,
small maggots grew within the jar,
and the smell grew stronger like
rotten flesh, and the texture was
very scummy and muddy. At a
glance, on set B, there were a few
small fungi that were beginning to
grow, and the color change was
very moderate and noticeable. In
set C, some parts of the sliced
banana were beginning to grow
mold and fungi, and the lid was
very pumped, like it was about to
explode.

Post laboratory Question
1. What is controlled experiment

A controlled experiment is a
scientific study in which one or
more variables are systematically
manipulated and controlled while
keeping all other factors constant.
This allows researchers to isolate
the effects of the manipulated
variables on the outcome being
measured, known as the
dependent variable.
2.What are the manipulated variables in the

Jar A: left without a cover,

experiment
allowing
flies to enter inside the jar
Jar B: covered with gauze, allowing
air to enter inside the jar.
Jar C: tightly covered with its cap,
occurring pressure inside the jar
3. Why do you observe growth of
fungi in all setups after several
days of the experiment?
The growth of fungi in all setups
can be attributed to the presence
of spores in the environment, with
Jar A's open exposure leading to
rapid growth, Jar B's gauze cover
allowing for slower growth, and Jar
C's tight seal initially limiting
spores but ultimately providing a
suitable substrate for fungal
growth as the banana
decomposed.
Conclusion
Based on the experiment with the three jars
containing bananas under different conditions, it
is evident that exposure to open air and warmth
accelerates the decay process. Jar A, left
uncovered in an open space, showed the most
rapid deterioration, leading to the growth of
maggots and a strong foul odor by the fifth day.
Jar B, covered with gauze, exhibited slower decay
with the growth of molds and fungi, while Jar C,
tightly covered in a cool and dry place, showed
the least amount of decay but still experienced
mold growth due to the trapped moisture and
lack of ventilation. This experiment highlights the
