What is qualitative
data analysis
Qualitative data refers to
pretty much any data that’s
“not numbers”. In other
words, it’s not the stuff you
measure using a fixed scale
or complex equipment, nor
do you analyse it using
complex statistics or
mathematics.
Qualitative data
analysis
Qualitative data is typically
generated through:
 Interview transcripts
 Surveys with open-ended
questions
 Contact center transcripts
 Texts and documents
 Audio and video recordings
 Observational notes

Difference between Qualitative
Data from quantitative data

Qualitative research focuses on words,

descriptions, concepts or ideas – while
quantitative research focuses on numbers
and statistics. Qualitative research
investigates the “softer side” of things to
explore and describe, while quantitative
research focuses on the “hard numbers”, to
measure differences between variables and
the relationships between them.
The “Five”
Qualitative Analysis
Methods
1.Content analysis
2.Thematic analysis
3.Narrative analysis
4.Grounded theory analysis
5.Discourse analysis
Content analysis
 Content analysis is a qualitative
research method that examines and
quantifies the presence of certain
words, subjects, and concepts in text,
image, video, or audio messages.
Content Analysis Example
Let's say a group of researchers wants to
examine gender representation in
elementary school textbooks. They start by
selecting a sample of textbooks commonly
used in primary schools. Next, they
systematically analyze the content of these
textbooks, looking for instances where
gender is mentioned or portrayed. They
might categorize these instances into
2. Thematic analysis
Thematic analysis is a
qualitative research method
used to identify, analyze, and
report patterns or themes
within a dataset, such as
interview transcripts, survey
responses, or observational
notes.
Thematic Analysis
Example
In a school setting, thematic analysis could
be employed to explore students'
perceptions of their learning experiences.
They might start by identifying initial codes
that capture key concepts or ideas expressed
by the students, such as "teacher-student
interaction," "peer collaboration,"
"engagement with the curriculum," or
"challenges faced in learning."
3. Narrative analysis
Narrative analysis is a method
used to interpret research
participants’ stories—things
like testimonials, case studies,
focus groups, interviews, and
other text or visual data
Narrative Analysis Example

Examples of narrative inquiry in

qualitative research include for instance:
stories, interviews, life histories, journals,
photographs and other artifacts.

4. Grounded theory analysis
Grounded theory analysis is a
method of conducting qualitative
research to develop theories by
examining real-world data. This
technique involves the creation of
hypotheses and theories through
Grounded theory Example

Grounded theory analysis involves

exploring teachers' experiences with
project-based learning (PBL). Through
interviews or observations, researchers
gather data on teachers' motivations for
using PBL, challenges faced, and
strategies employed. Systematic coding
and constant comparison of data lead to
the identification of key concepts and
the development of theoretical
5. Discourse analysis

Discourse analysis is the act of

researching the underlying meaning of
qualitative data. It involves the
observation of texts, audio, and videos
to study the relationships between
information and its social context.
Discourse analysis Example
For example, researchers might analyze
newspaper articles about climate change
to uncover recurring themes and discursive
strategies that shape public perceptions.
Through discourse analysis, researchers
aim to reveal underlying meanings and
ideologies, shedding light on issues such
SUMMARY
1.Purpose: Qualitative data analysis aims to explore and understand
complex phenomena, behaviors, and experiences by examining the
richness and depth of qualitative data.
2.Methods: Various methods are used for qualitative data analysis,
including thematic analysis, content analysis, narrative analysis, grounded
theory, and discourse analysis. These methods involve systematic
approaches to coding, categorizing, and interpreting qualitative data.
3.Importance: Qualitative data analysis is essential for generating
insights, theories, and understanding social, cultural, and psychological
phenomena. It provides rich contextual understanding, informs decision-
making, contributes to theory development, and enhances the validity of
research findings.
