TECHNOLOGY-
BASED ART
What is Technology-based
art?

- Technology-based art is
essentially computer-
generated and/or
manipulated.
• Visual arts definition, the arts created
primarily for visual perception, as drawing,
graphics, painting, sculpture, and the
decorative arts.
Through the centuries, visual
artists used actual brushes and
palettes, and a whole array of paints,
inks, and natural pigments applied to
paper, canvas, fabric, walls and
• Computer technology has by now
invaded every aspect of modern life. It
was, therefore, inevitable that it would
develop into forms and devices that
could be mass produced, mass
distributed, and therefore widely
accessible to everyone.
Today’s computer
artists employ the ever-
expanding powers of image
manipulation programs and
applications to create their
works which can appear in an
entire range of media—
whether as a physical output
or a virtual experience.
What is
Computer /
Digital Art?
- make use of electronic and
mechanical devices, rather than the
artist’s own hand, to produce the
desired images and effects. Thus,
these are definitely technology-
based art forms.
- In recent decades, personal
gadgets such as laptops, tablets,
and android phones have
incorporated the artistic capabilities
of the large-scale computers. So it is
now possible for anyone to be a
Computer/Digital Art
- Mobile phone (photos/Videos)
- Digital Photography
- Digital Painting
- Computer Generated Images
- Videos (TV and Film)
The mobile phone that you
constantly hold has evolved from
a mere communication tool, into
a creative device that allows you
to generate original works of art
for an entire range of purposes.
These could be personal
photographs and videos that you
can manipulate with a myriad
special effects, both visual as well
as
sound and music.
They could also be school
projects or reports that require
you to combine images,
incorporate text, even include
simple animation.
And the wonder of it all is that
you can do all these right on your
own mobile devices, particularly the
new-generation models known as
android tablets, phones, and
combination of both called
“phablets.”
The tasks that traditional photo
editors used to perform manually—
cropping, retouching, airbrushing—are
now just a few of the many editing effects
done for you with split-second ease at the
click of a mouse, a keyboard command, or
a few taps and drags of your finger on a
touch screen.
You are probably already familiar with
the following image manipulation
programs and applications that run
on today’s android devices:
– a powerful, free online image editor
– allows you to make collages incorporating
photos, stickers, text, and frames
- a downloadable application for android phones that
allows you to make collages out of images from your
photo gallery.
- an iPad application (with a free downloadable
version) that enables you to ‘doodle’ on your images
using available stickers.
– a downloadable application that allows you to ‘bring
your photos to life’ in short videos set to music of
your choice
– a fast and fun way to share images with others; snap a photo,
choose from among the available filters, and share via
Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and more.
Computer-generated image (CGI)
can be defined as any image that
is created with the use of a
computer-based processor or
program.
Because computers nowadays
are so widely used, these images
are therefore remarkably
pervasive.
Characteristics:
Computer-generated
images are difficult to identify
because many images are
processed using a computer.
Characteristics:
• brightness, contrast, and
colors are not necessarily
computer generated.
What is
digital
- Is recording the image using
a digital camera or a device
with a built-in camera, like
your mobile
phone, android device, or
tablet.
Today’s users have the option of a
“point-and-shoot” type of digital camera
which automatically makes all the
adjustments in lighting, focus, zoom-in and
zoom-out, even removal of “red eye” with
the user being given some leeway for slight
adjustments.
It offers image enhancement features like
adjusting color and brightness imbalances,
as well as sharpening or blurring the image.
It may
even offer unique effects like “fish eye” or
filters that allow pre-setting of the photo
to be taken with a colored tint or a special
texture
Plus, it allows the user to immediately
review the photos taken without waiting for
a complex developing process—and to
delete any unsatisfactory images while
storing the good ones for future needs.
A second option is the digital single lens
reflex (DSLR) camera. This also provides
the film-less and instant review features of a
“point-and-shoot” type of digital camera,
but gives the photographer much more
artistic freedom and control to select the
camera settings to create the desired final
image with the preferred visual effects.
Characteristics:

Being so it is generally
understood that mere
incorporation, alteration and
enhancement of images and basic
properties such as brightness,
contrast, and colors are not
necessarily computer generated.
• Elements of Art as Applied to Technology-Based Art
The elements of art help you identify and interpret an artwork easily.
These are line, shape, color, value, form, texture, and space.
These are incorporated in any artwork- traditional or technology-
based/digital art.

Technology-Based
Artworks: Their
Role, Function and
Characteristics
LESSON I:

Modern Technology: Its

Role and Function on
Artworks
Reasons why digital artists use modern
technology as a tool for empowerment:
a. A form of communication- It
expresses ideas through visual
elements and principles in an artistic,
advanced and creative way. Symbols
and signages are typical examples
that give important directions or
instructions that need to be followed.
Digital posters and slogans are also
powerful tools to convey messages of
different issues.
b. Accessible to mass
consumption- With the
availability of modern
technology, digital artworks
are easier to access and share
in the different social and
multimedia platforms.
c. Wider range of artforms to produce-
With the different applications and
software available in making digital
artworks, artists have many choices to
the kind of artwork they want to
produce. At the comfort of making
their masterpieces, they can explore
and develop their skills, talents and
self-confidence further.
d. More productive and practical-
Creating digital artworks uses limited
materials unlike the traditional way of
making art. It is also easier to
manipulate these modern art gadgets
by simply undoing committed mistakes
in the art piece. In terms of the
productivity, digital artworks are easier
to create and sell.
Role/function of artworks as to utilization and
combination of art elements and principles
1. Non-Motivated Function of Art
- Art is based on one’s
perspective and does not
fulfill a specific external
purpose. In this manner, art
as creativity is something
humans must do by their
very nature and is
therefore beyond utility
a. Basic human instinct for harmony, balance, and
rhythm- It is a personal and internal appreciation of
aesthetic value (balance and beauty).
b. Experience of the mysterious- It gives brand new
experience to people by valuing the meaning of the
art.
c. Expression of the imagination- It shares the
experience of the artist through forms, symbols and
ideas with meaning that can be perceived in the
artwork.
d. Ritualistic and symbolic function- In many cultures,
art is used in rituals, performances and dances as
symbols and decorations such as part of the
background, in different apparels and costumes.
2. Motivated Functions of Art
- These arts are intentional, and they are used
by the artist or creator.
- They can function to bring about political
change, to comment or to convey specific
idea.
- Can be used for medical purposes,
entertainment and communication.
1. Communication.
- As most forms of communication, it has an
intent to give meaning and direction towards
another individual. This is a motivated
purpose. Illustrative arts and maps are
examples of these arts as communication.
2. Art as entertainment.
- Digital art gives mixed emotions and moods for
the purpose of relaxing or entertaining the
viewer.
3. The Avant-Garde.
- This is the Art of political change. In the 21st
century, digital arts were used to bring about
political change.
4. Art as a “free zone”.
- Contemporary art has enhanced its tolerance
toward cultural differences, as well as critical
and liberating functions (social inquiry, activism,
subversion, deconstruction, etc.). It paves the
way to a wider place for exploration and
experimentation
5. Art for Social Causes. Art can be used to raise
awareness in the different issues in the
surrounding. For an instance, the conduct of art
exhibits that aims to raise awareness of autism,
cancer, human trafficking and other issues.
6. Art for Medical Purposes.
- Art is also used as a therapy by therapists,
psychotherapists and clinical psychologists.
7. Art for propaganda or commercialism.
- Art is often utilized as propaganda to influence
popular conception or mood. In the same way, it
is also used to sell products. In this case, art
subtly manipulates the viewer into a particular
emotion or psychological response to an idea or
object.
Directions: Identify the following statements.
Write T if the statement is true and write F if the
statement is false.
1. Technology-based art allows communication
between the artist and the audience.
2. Digital art has the same characteristics as
traditional art.
3. Elements of art are indispensable factors that
also affect technology-based art.
4. The use of lightness and darkness of color,
shading, and highlighting in an artwork is value.
5. Vincent Raphael Aseo is the co-director of the
animated film inside-out and an animator in
Warner Bros.
