competency-based TVET.
The Competency-Based Training (CBT)

Is a training delivery mode where trainees are

given opportunities to learn in their own pace with
the trainer as an integral part of the instruction
10 basic principles of competency-based TVET

1. THE TRAINING IS BASED ON

CURRICULUM DEVELOPED FROM THE
COMPETENCY STANDARDS;

Learning materials that are directly related to those standards are not
available in bookstores. ... The Competency Standards (CS) is the written
specification of the knowledge, skills and attitudes values required for
those the workplace.
How can competency
standards be measured?

• The most effective way to do this is in terms of the

behaviors that define a specific competency. Behaviors
are made up of three aspects; a person's Knowledge,
Skills, and Attitudes, their K.S.A.'s. These aspects break
down the measurement of behaviors into practical chunks
that you can monitor, observe and record.

K.S.A
Knowledge: cognitive or mental abilities used to retain and
process information. Skills: physical abilities used to
perform activities or tasks. Attitudes: feelings or emotional
about someone or something.
10 basic principles of competency-based TVET

2. Learning is modular in its structure;

Modular system is an educational system whose curriculum is made up

of modules. The parts of the modules are arranged so that they complete
each other. Each module provides knowledge and skills towards
proficiency in a field. ... experience and knowledge related to the subject
in class.
10 basic principles of competency-based TVET

3. Training delivery is individualized and

self-paced;
Is an online class the same as a self
paced class?
Online courses are delivered
asynchronously where students learn on
their own schedule (self-paced learning)
without any real time instructor.
Self-paced learning is defined as a specific
learning method in which the learner is
able to control the amount of material they
consume as well as the duration of time
they need to learn the new information
properly.
10 basic principles of competency-based TVET

4) Training is based on work that must be

performed.
On-the-job training, also known as OJT, is
a hands-on method of teaching the skills,
knowledge, and competencies needed for
employees to perform a specific job within
the workplace. ... Training takes place
within the employee's normal job
environment and may occur as he or she
performs their actual work.
10 basic principles of competency-based TVET

5. Training materials are directly related to the

competency standards and the curriculum.

Assessment of learner is based in the

collection of evidences of work
performance based on industry or
organizational required standards. ...
Training allows for multiple entry and exit.
10 basic principles of competency-based TVET

6. Assessment of learners is based in the collection of

evidences of work performance based on industry or
organizational required
10 basic principles of competency-based TVET

7. Training is based both on and off the job components

On-the-job training provides the learner
with training in the workplace and the
learner will produce evidence whilst
learning. Whereas off-the-job training
requires the learner to spend a certain
number of hours away from the work
environment, giving them the opportunity to
learn in groups and meet other individuals

Better learning with industry and school

partnership
10 basic principles of competency-based TVET

8. Training program allows for Recognition of Prior

Learning (RPL) or current competencies

CBT focuses on the competencies that are not yet

acquired by the trainee in any learning situation.
Competencies acquired as a result of previous
training, employment and life experiences should be
recognized so that trainees will not waste time doing
the learning activities of the competencies that they
already have. It is one of your task to identify these
prior learning of your trainees and plan for the
training of each trainee based on this data.
10 basic principles of competency-based TVET

9.The system allows for learner to enter and exit programs

at different times and levels and to receive an award for
competencies attained at any point.

There is flexibility for entry and exit from

programs
10 basic principles of competency-based TVET

What is
E-learning?
E-learning is education facilitated through the use of
electronic technologies. It allows students and
educators to form an avenue of learning outside the
four walls of a traditional classroom. Using various
online platforms and applications, learning is made
possible in spite of the current circumstances and
safety restraints due to COVID-19.
Pros of E-learning

• Convenient
• Safe
• More interactive and innovative
• Less cost
Cons of E-learning

 Accessibility to learning may vary due to

signal and internet speed issues

 Isolation and less collaborative
