What Are
Deployment Diagrams?
Deployment diagrams visually represent how software and
hardware are connected and how they interact.

They help system designers and teams understand the

relationships and dependencies between various system
components.

Example:
In the CY Avenue Gym Management System, the
deployment diagram could show how the Gym System installed
on a Gym Workstation interacts with the Member Database
hosted on a Central Server. Employees and Admins use this
system to manage memberships, schedules, payments, and etc.
Nodes (Hardware)
What Are Nodes?
Nodes represent the physical or
virtual machines where software
runs. They can be computers,
servers, or cloud platforms.

Notation:
In a deployment diagram, a node is shown as a rectangle
or box.

Artifacts
(Software)
What Are Artifacts?
artifacts represent software
components, such as files, applications,
databases, or configurations.

Notation:
In a deployment diagram, an artifact is shown as a cylinder or rectangle.
How Nodes Communicate?
Communication paths show how nodes
(hardware) send data or requests to each
other, typically using protocols like HTTP,
TCP/IP, etc.

Notation:
In deployment diagrams, communication paths are lines between nodes,
often labeled with the protocol (e.g., TCP/IP).

Building Blocks
Nodes (Hardware):
CY Avenue Gym:
• Gym Workstation: Computers used by staff to manage gym
operations.
• Central Server: A server hosting the Member Database and Gym
Management System backend.

Artifacts (Software):
CY Avenue Gym:
• Gym Management System Software: Installed on Gym Workstations
for staff to monitor memberships, schedules, and payments.
• Member Database: Stored on the Central Server to manage all
member data

Why Are They Important?
Deployment diagrams help in understanding
and planning the physical structure of
systems.

Why Important?
• They help clarify how components are connected.
• Identify hardware and software dependencies.
• Help teams communicate system design more effectively.

Example: By seeing how nodes and artifacts connect, teams

can spot potential issues or improvements in a system design.
