growth.

Disadvantages

 Plants produced from seeds are not true-to-

type.
 Plants may take years to produce flowers
Division
Plants which produce masses of stems
at ground level, each having its own root system,
are lifted from ground and divided into individuals

clumps
Separation
The rooted or the unrooted parts
usually detach themselves on maturity and
develop as a new individual next season.
Suckers
Some plants produce new stems
from the adventitious buds formed on their
roots called suckers. When it is developed
from the underground part of the stem it is
known as stem sucker

sucker
Rhizome
Rhizome is thickened underground stem
with distinct nodes and internodes, scaly
leaves and buds on it.
Roots and nodes develop at the nodes
and grow into new plants.
Tuber
Tuber is short thickened parts of
underground branch which store large quantity
of pant food(mainly starch).
 Eyes of the potato are its nodes
where buds and roots will develop.
Bulb
In bulbs, the stem is reduced extremely
to a disc around which fleshy leaf scales
remain attached.
corms
Corm is an underground stem with fleshy,
vertical axis, covered with dried leaf base.
Cutting
Process by which a plant is
produced by detach a vegetative portion from
the plant and rooting in a favourable medium
under optimum condition.

It is cheapest and most convenient

method and hence most popular method
among all methods.
Types of cutting
1. Stem cutting
a) Herbaceous or soft wood cutting
b) Semi-hard wood cutting
c) Hard wood cutting
2. Heel or Mallet cutting
3. Node cutting
4. Root cutting
5. Leaf cutting
6. Leaf-bud cutting
