Major Landforms Of The Earth

Mountains
• Any natural elevation of the earth surface.
• Considerably higher than the surrounding area.
• Higher, the climate becomes colder.
• Glaciers- Permanently frozen river of ice.
• Range- Mountains may be arranged in a line.
• The Himalayas - Asia
• The Alps - Europe
• The Andes - South America

• The Himalayan Mountains and The Alps are
young fold mountains
• The Aravali range in India is Oldest fold
Mountain system in the world.
• The Appalachians in North America
• The Ural Mountains in Russia
• Round features and low elevation. Very old fold
mountains.
Block mountains
• When large areas are broken and displaced
vertically.
• Horsts-Uplifted blocks
• Graben- lowered blocks
• The Rhine Valley and the Vosges mountain in
Europe are examples of such mountain systems.
Volcanic mountains
• Due to volcanic activity
• Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa
• Mt. Fujiyama in Japan
Mountains are very useful
• Storehouse of water
• Source in the glaciers in the mountains.
• Irrigation and generation of hydro-electricity
• River valleys and terraces are ideal for cultivation of crops.
• Rich variety of flora and fauna
• Forests provide fuel, fodder, shelter and other products like gum etc.

• An elevated flat land and a flat – topped table land
• One or more sides with steep slopes.
• The Deccan plateaus in India is one of the oldest
plateaus.
• The East African plateaus in Kenya.
Tanzania and Uganda
• The western plateaus of Australia .
• The Tibet plateau is the highest plateau in the world.
(Ht. 4,000 – 6000 mtrs above the sea level)
Plateaus are very useful
• Rich in mineral deposits.
• Many of the mining areas in the world are located in the plateau
areas.
• The African Plateau – Gold and Diamond Mining.
• In India (Chhotanagpur plateau) – Iron, Coal and Manganese

• Waterfalls as the river falls from a great height.
• the Hundru falls in the Chhotanagpur plateau on the river

• the Jog falls in Karnataka
