Overview

A. Essay question types:


What are the differences between these questions? Which topic do you give your own opinion? Which
requires the opinions of other people?
1. Some people think that the only purpose of working hard is to earn money. To what extent do you agree
or disagree with this opinion?
2. Some people believe that punishment is the only purpose of prisons, while others believe that prisons
exist for various reasons. Discuss both views.
3. The number of plants and animals is declining. Explain the problems and suggest some solutions.
4. Many people around the world are choosing to move to live in cities. What problems do people
experience in big cities? Should governments encourage people to move to smaller towns?
Notes:
a) An opinion question asks for your view, not the views of other people, and you don’t have to give both
sides of the argumen. Just make your opinion clear in the introduction, then explain it in the rest of the
essay.
b) Answer two questions. Write one paragraph for each.
c) A discussion question requires you to write about both sides of the argument, and you should write a
similar amout for each. If the question also asks for your opinion, you don’t need an extra paragraph.
Just make it clear (In the conclusion) which of the two views you agree with.
d) One paragraph for causes, one for solutions.

C. Overpopulation of urban areas means that many children
now grow up in cities. There are people who claim that living
in a city is advantageous for child development. However, it
cannot be denied that city life may cause problems for some
children.
2. Do the disadvantages outweigh the advantages?
E. The use of cellular phones has increased tremendously
and they are seen almost everywhere in society. There are
many people who think that these devices are enormously
beneficial, whereas others feel mobile phone usage brings
significantly more drawbacks.
3. Problems and solutions.
D. Nowadays, cities have attracted a lot of people because of
new employment opportunities and social life. However, due
to increased environmental pollution, modern cities face
serious issues as a result of having too many people. It is
clear that changes must be required for citizens and
implemented by the government.
4. 2-part question.
A. It is true that a rich variety of musical styles can be found
around the world. Music is a vital part of all human cultures
for a range of reasons, and I would argue that traditional
music is more important than modern, international music.
5. To what extent do you agree with this view?
F. It is certainly true that computers and various forms of
information technology (IT) are an important part of many
people’s lives. While this is true these technologies may be
harmful to society in some ways, I believe that their current
and future benefits exceed any damage they may cause.
6. Do you agree or disagree?
B. There is no doubt that there are a lot of concerns about
which skills are the most valuable for a child to gain in
schools. I think it is a good idea for all children to study at
least one language from a country other than their own.
