Analysis of Structures
PART 1
Engg 1013 – Statics of Rigid Bodies
Topic Outline (Part 1)

 Definitions and Uses

 Assumptions
 Types of Trusses (Truss Classifications)
 Nature of supports and their reactions
 Structural stability/instability
 Static indeterminacy of structures – external and
internal
Definition and Uses
 As an engineer, you must be able to classify structures
according to their FORM and FUNCTION. Composed of
structural members, joined together by structural
connections is called STRUCTURAL SYSTEM.
 Basic types of structures include: Trusses, Beams,
Frames, Cables & Arches,. This subject will focus on
ANALYSIS of TRUSSES.
 A truss is an assemblage of straight members
connected at their ends by flexible connections to form
a rigid configuration. Because of their light weight and
high strength, trusses are widely used, and their
applications range from supporting bridges and roofs of
buildings to being support structures in space stations.

Although a great majority of

trusses can be analyzed as
plane trusses, there are
some truss systems, such as
transmission towers and
latticed domes that cannot
be treated as plane trusses

ASSUMPTIONS in TRUSS ANALYSIS

1. All members are

connected only at their
ends by frictionless
hinges in plane trusses
and by frictionless ball-
and-socket joints in space
trusses.

2. All loads and support reactions are applied

only at the joints.

3. The centroidal axis of each member coincides with

the line connecting the centers of the adjacent
joints.

 The structures for which the reactions at the supports
and the internal forces in the members can be found by static
equilibrium is called statically determinate structures.
 The structures for which the reactions at the supports
and the internal forces in the members cannot be found by
static equilibrium is called statically indeterminate structure.
Additional compatibility equations are needed to solve the

Conditions of Static Instability,
Determinacy, and Indeterminacy

Let r be the number of reactions. If

a) r < 3 the structure is statically unstable externally
b) r =3 the structure is statically determinate externally
c) r > 3 the structure is statically indeterminate externally

Structural Theory, including its internal and external
stability and determinacy.
