Output Devices
• Definition
• An output device is any hardware device used to send
data from a computer to another device or user
Output Devices
• Monitor
• Standard output device provide visual output
• Display output generated by computer on screen
• Just like television screen
• Different types with different resolution, size and
characteristics
Types of monitors
• CRT (Cathode Ray Tube)
• LCD (Liquid Crystal Diode)
• LED (Light Emitted Diode)
Output Devices
Types of monitors
• CRT (Cathode Ray Tube)
• Vacuum tube technology
• Low cost, reliable and colors
• Consume much electricity and heavy in weight
• LCD (Liquid Crystal Diode)
• LCD monitor uses liquid crystal
• Very slim and light weight
• Used in Notebook, small computers, pagers and other devices
• LED (Light Emitted Diode)
• LED enhance version of LCD having LED backlight
• Used semiconductor diode instead of filament
• Cell phone, computers, monitor, flash light and movement
sensor
Output Devices
• Printer
• User display output on screen but sometimes need
output on paper
• It is possible with the help of printer
• Black and white and color printers are available
• Different types of printer
• Dot matrix Printer
• Inkjet Printer
• Drum Printer
• Chain or Band Printer
• Laser Printer
Output Devices
• Dot matrix Printer
• Character printer print one character at one time
• Pins strikes on ribbon to form a character against paper
• Speed of printing is 30 to 550 characters per second
Characteristics
• Low cast and consume less energy
Limitations
• Create noise during printing
• Print only text in low resolution
• Limited font and low quality graphics
Output Devices
• Inkjet Printer
• Character printer prints all kind of graphics
• Print one character at a time
• Use in bottles in different color combinations
• Graphic quality depends strength of ink cartridges\
• Attach with USB cable
Characteristics
• Consumes less energy
• High printing quality
Limitations
• High printing cost
Output Devices
• Drum Printer
• Prints entire line at a time
• Use cylindrical drum have characters as printing mechanism
• Desire character is rotates around hammer line while printing
• Hammer hits ribbon to form a character
Characteristics
• They consume less ink
Limitations
• Low printing speed
• Low printing quality and they also produce noise
• Cover a lot of space
Output Devices
• Laser Printer
• Page printer print whole page at a time
• Use tonner to print
• High quality printer produce resolution range from 600 to
1200 dot per inch (DPI)
• Laser beam use to form character on drum
• Character image transfer to paper from drum
Characteristics
• High speed and noiseless
• High printing quality
• Print on both sides of paper
Limitations
• Printer are expensive
Output Devices
• Plotters
• Prints architectural, engineering and mechanical high
quality drawing on large sheet
• Pen plotters commonly used have 6 to 8 pens
• Pens move across the entire paper
• Prints complex technical drawing
• New plotter use ink or LED toner
• Raster Plotter are digital plotter in combination or small
pixels
Output Devices
• Special Function Terminal (ATM, POS)
ATM
• Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) use in bank to
withdrawal money from outside at any time
• Easy and secure transaction of money
• Use real time operating system
• ATM monitor are special use to money transition
Characteristics
• Instant cash drawl facility
• Inquire quick balance
• Easy to transfer fund / Money
• PIN number can be change any time
Output Devices
• Special Function Terminal (ATM, POS)
POS Terminal
• POS (point of scale) terminal use in place of cash register
• POS replaced manual system to maintain sale and purchase
record
• Immediately updates record in memory and print receipt
• Record and track customer record
• Process credit and debit cards
• Utility stores use POS to maintain sales, stock and
generates receipt
Output Devices
• Multimedia Projector
• Multimedia projector is use to display information on
large screen.
• Helpful in delivering lectures and presentation
• Two Types of Multimedia Projector
Output Devices
• Voice Response Systems
• Enable computers to talk with user
• Audio response device produce audio output
• Provide easy communication way to computer and user
Types of Voice Response System
• Voice reproduction system
• Use database of prerecorded response like words, phrases, or
sentences recorded by human
• Produce output by selecting words, phrases or sentence from
database
Application of voice Reproduction system
• Special ATM machine uses VRS to provide guidance to
customer
• Helps customers to make financial transaction
• Automatic answering machine used in telephone enquiries
Output Devices
Speech Synthesizer
• Convert text information into spoken words
• Helps disable persons who cannot read easily
• When user feed text data, the sequence are words combined into
phonemes
• Phonemes amplified and pass to speaker
Application of Speech Synthesizer
• Helpful to blind persons who cannot read
• In special education center books are converted into speech
synthesizer
• It become very easy to get updated knowledge or information
• It helpful to person who cannot speak, he can communicate to
other using this
• Speech synthesizer program convert entered text into spoken
words in any selected language.
