Introduction to ratios

RATIOS
WHAT IS RATIO
Mathematically Ratio is a comparison of two numbers and it is indicated
by the sign ‘:’
For example 5:8
Ratio or comparisons can be made between things which belongs to the
same category
Like you cannot compare the weight of an animal and no. of pencils
Example :
Like write 24 and 15 in ratios
Hence we will write it as 24/15
i.e. 8/5
Here we can make the comparison because 24 and 15 both
are nos.
Another example
Weight of a cat is say 30 kg and weight of a dog is 60 kg
So we can compare these two quantities as both come
under the same category of weight
Hence its ratio will be written as
Weight of cat / weight of dog = 30/60
i.e. 1/2
Can we make a comparison or find out the ratio of weight of
an animal say a giant rhino and number of pencils
So the answer is no as they do not belong to the same
category
Hence we cannot find out the ratio
There are two
types of ratio
• Part to part
• Part to whole
Example
• Say in a pen holder we have 20 pens of blue and black color
• Say we have 6 pens of blue color and 14 pens of black color
So if we find the ratio between blue and black colored pens then it will be a part
to part ratio
i.e. 6/14
3/7
If we find ratio between blue pens and total no. of pens then it will be a part to
whole fraction
i.e. 6/20
3/10
Difference between ratio and fraction

• Ratio is denoted by :
• Fraction is denoted by /
error analysis
Is 3:2 and 2:3 same ?
No ,how
For example if you ate 8 bananas from a dozen then the ratio of banana eaten to total number
will be
8:12
i.e. 2:3
And in fractions it will be 2/3
And if you are asked the ratio of total no. of bananas to the no. of bananas eaten then it will be
12:8
i.e. 3:2
And in fractions it will be 3/2
How do we compare two different ratios

Which one is greater ?

2:3 or 1:5
Hence we will be making the denominator that is the lower part of both fractions same first
then evaluate
First find out the least common multiple of 3 and 5
i.e. 15
Then multiply and divide 2/3 by 5 so we get 10/15
Again multiply and divide1:5 by 3 we get 3/15
Hence we can make the comparison between 2:3 and 1:5
10/15 is greater than 3/15
hence 2:3 is greater than 1:5
