Solar Water Heating System Design
Solar Water Heating System Design
System Design
Energy Efficiency and Sustainability
Introduction
• The proposed design is for a solar water heating system
tailored for a small household. This system aims to heat
water from 20°C to 45°C using only solar energy,
ensuring energy efficiency and sustainability.
Review Literature on Passive Solar
Water Heaters
• Types:
• Flat Plate Collectors (FPC): Absorbs solar radiation using
a dark flat plate.
• Evacuated Tube Collectors (ETC): Uses vacuum-sealed
glass tubes.
• Batch Systems: Heat water directly in storage tanks
exposed to sunlight.
• Components:
• Collector, Insulated Storage Tank, Piping System,
Glazing
Energy Requirements
• Daily Hot Water Consumption: 150 liters/day
• Temperature Rise: ∆T = 25°C (20°C to 45°C)
• Energy Calculation: Q = m × c × ∆ T
• Q = 150 × 4.18 × 25 = 15,675 kJ/day = 4.35 kWh/day
Solar Collector Design
• Solar Energy Available: 5 kWh/m²
• Efficiency: 60%
• Collector Area: 1.45 m² (calculated as 4.35 / (0.6 × 5))
• Type: Flat Plate Collector (FPC)
Storage Tank Design
• Material: Stainless steel or polymer (food-grade).
• Insulation: Polyurethane foam (PUF), 50 mm thick
• Capacity: 150 liters
• Orientation: South-facing (Northern Hemisphere).
Heat Loss Analysis
• Conduction Loss: Q = k × A × ∆ T / d
• Q = 0.02 × 1.45 × 25 / 0.05 = 14.5 W
• Radiation Loss: Reduced using double-glazed tempered
glass.
Optimization
• Self-Sustaining Power: Photovoltaic panel for the pump.
• Selective Absorber Coating: Reduces emissivity.
• Thermal Storage Enhancement: Use phase change
materials (PCM).
Conclusion
• The proposed solar water heating system is an energy-
efficient solution for a small household. With proper
material selection, insulation, and collector design, the
system will meet daily heating needs sustainably.
