USED TO

► We use used to do to talk about the


past. It is not a tense but it is like a
tense. It is a special expression. We
use the expression ‘used to do’ for
the past only.
It is used to talk about:
 an activity that we did regularly in the
past (like a habit)
 a situation that was true in the past
Examples
► Sheused to work in a shop.
(Now she works in a bank.)

► Heused to watch a lot of TV.


(Now he doesn't watch much TV.)

► Theyused to be married.
(Now they are divorced.)
► Thereused to be a cinema here.
(Now there is a supermarket here.)

►Ididn't use to go swimming.


(Now I go swimming.)

► Did you use to smoke?

USED TO / WOULD
► We can use both used to and would to talk
about repeated events and actions in the
past:
 My grandfather used to/would walk five
kilometres each morning.
 She would/used to bake a big chocolate cake
every Sunday.
► Ifyou want to talk about repeated states in
the past, you must use used to:
 He used to be a baker (NOT He would be …)
 I used to have a black cat called Maisy (NOT I
would have …)

USED TO + INFINITIVE expresses a
break between past and present.

► There used to be a church on the top


of that hill.
► They used to be happy together
before he lost his wife in a car crash.
► I didn't use to like classical music but
I've learnt to love it.
TO BE USED TO + NOUN PHRASE (noun,
pronoun, gerund) expresses a notion of
habit.

► After
so many years, he is still not
used to driving on the right.
TO GET USED TO + NOUN PHRASE
(noun, pronoun, gerund) means to
become used to, to acquire a habit.

► Young drivers must get used to driving


in heavy traffic as soon as possible.
