Ethics in Data Science

• Data Ethics is a branch of ethics that evaluates data

practices = collecting, analyzing and sharing data that
have the potential to adversely impact people and society .

• In short , its about using data to benefit society while

respecting people’s rights and minimizing risks.
Importance of Ethics in Data
Science
Data science can influence
lives, so ethical guidelines
ensure fairness, privacy,
and accountability.
Without ethics, data
misuse could lead to
discrimination, breaches
of privacy, and loss of
public trust.
Misuse of data can lead to
legal, financial, and
reputational damage
Privacy and Security
The importance of User
Consent :
• Ensures Individual have control
over their personal data.
• Builds trust through
transparency about data usage
• Users should be informed about
how their data is collected,
used , stored and shared.
• The data collected is available
for use when its needed by the
user .

Bias in Data
Bias in data refers to errors in a dataset that can lead to
unfair results when the data is used in analysis.

Bias in data can significantly impact results here’s

how :

Inaccurate Predictions : It can lead to suboptimal or

incorrect results.

Unfair Treatment : Bias can cause certain groups to

be favored or disadvantaged.

Loss of Trust : It can erode public confidence in data-

driven decisions.
Consequences of Bias
•Bias in data can have sever consequences and I have stated
some of them below :
• It can perpetuate and amplify harmful stereotypes.
• Unfair outcomes leading to societal inequality.
• Loss of trust in technology and institutions.
• Privacy Infringements and Harmful Outcomes.
•Cambridge Analytica harvested personal
Real- data from millions of Facebook users
without explicit consent.
Life •This data was used to influence political
campaigns , including the 2016 US
Cases: presidential elections .
• Ethical Issues :
Cambrid • Lack of informed consent from users.
ge • Breach of privacy
Analytic •Lessons Learned:
• Transparency is essential
a • Consent must be explicit and not buried
in complex T&O
Amazon Recuritment Ai

•Amazon developed an Ai tool to screen job applications , but the system favored male
candidates over female candidates because it was trained on resumes submitted over a
decade reflecting historical gender biases .
•Ethical Issues :
• Gender bias in data leading to unfair practices.
• Lack of inspection in the training data set.
• Lessons Learned :
• Regular checks for biases in training data can prevent discrimination
• Using modern data and keep updating it.
