Technology refers to methods, systems, and devices


which are the result of scientific knowledge being
used for practical purposes.

Ex. Internet, social media, phones etc.


History of Technology in Qualitative Data Analysis
• According to Schönfelder, qualitative research is a
heterogeneous field comprised of different and sometimes
competing analytic strategies.
• Doing qualitative research is really burdensome for most
researchers. This reason gave rise to the extensive use of
technology in doing such job.
• In fact, Gibbs, Friese and Mangabeira reported that the earliest
use of technology in qualitative researches is in the form of
tape recorders in doing field interview sessions followed by
CCTV.
What is Qualitative Data

• The identification, examination, and interpretation of themes in the


data to answer research questions.
• Miles and Huberman (1994), see qualitative data analysis as
involving data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions -
a process parallel to quantitative analysis.

• It is in this context that most CAQDAS has developed.

• CAQDAS instead allows the researcher to operate on an entirely


new level.

• Computer Aided Qualitative Data Analysis


Software (CAQDAS)
• A database with some powerful qualitative analysis tools.
• CAQDAS searches, organizes, categorizes, and annotates
textual and visual data.
• Programs of this type usually support theory-building
through the visualization of relationships between data
and/or theoretical.
Role of CAQDAS in Qualitative Data analysis:

•Display data in different ways, and show interrelationships


between concepts
•Search for keywords or phrases across a dataset.
•Keep track of counts and frequencies of phenomenon
•Make comparisons between attributes and demographics
•Enable collaboration between teams that analyze the same
dataset together.
•Increase rigor and reduce bias by keeping your analysis
process organized so it can be reviewed later by yourself or a peer
researcher
